UBC Recreation is currently updating its list of available programs in accordance with the recent extension of Provincial Health Orders through February 5. The following activities are suspended/cancelled: 

  • Group fitness classes
    • Cardio, Conditioning & Strength classes (Zumba, Barre Fitness, & Women on Weights)
    • Martial arts
    • Dance
    • Boot camps and Group Fitness classes
    • Spin classes
  • Adult lessons
    • Learn to Skate
    • Tennis clinics, drills, leagues
    • Adult Swim 
  • Aqua Fitness & Aqua Stretch classes
  • Thunderbird Adult Hockey League games
  • Intramural sport contests
  • Wellbeing Walks

Please note that persons registered in these programs will be contacted directly about credit or alternate options.

These activities and programs will only resume when safe and with approval from local health authorities. Please note, if a program or activity is not on the above list it is proceeding as regularly scheduled. 

As a reminder, face masks are required when indoor at all UBC sport facilities except when exercising or performing physical activity.

Fitness & Classes

Due to an extension of Provincial Health Orders through February 5, the following programs are currently unavailable: Cardio, Conditioning & Strength classes (Zumba, Barre Fitness, & Women on Weights), Martial Arts, Dance, Boot camps, Group Fitness classes, and Spin classes. Yoga & pilates classes will resume beginning January 11. The ARC & BirdCoop Fitness Centres are open with reduced capacity to those with memberships. Personal training is also available at this time. Everyone is reminded to show up dressed for activity; areas to change will be limited. Advanced registration is required for all activities. Effective January 18, all patrons are required to wear non-medical face masks at all times when indoors at the BirdCoop and/or ARC Fitness Centre.

UBC Aquatic Centre

Effective November 7 at 10:00pm, UBC Recreation is temporarily suspending the operation of the following programs and events indefinitely: Aqua Fitness & Aqua Stretch classes. The UBC Aquatic Centre is open with limited hours and reduced activities. Length swim, recreation swim, swimming lessons, private lessons, performance private coaching, and certifications are available at this time. On November 28 capacities for length swimming will resume to a maximum of three (3) per double lane (25m), and five (5) per double lane (50m). The UBC Aquatic Centre is open only for registered programs or by appointment.

SRC Drop-in Sports & Activities

Please note updated changes to permitted activities and capacities due to updated health orders. The SRC gyms are open  for singles table tennis and badminton specific conditions for participation. The SRC Studio is available for dance, martial arts practice, or functional use. Capacities are limited to 2 people per session. Reservations required. Face coverings are required when indoor at all UBC sport facilities except when exercising or performing physical activity.


UBC Tennis Centre

Due to updated health orders, the UBC Tennis Centre is implementing the following changes: Adult group lessons will be adjusted to only two people per court Only singles play for court rentals Youth lessons continue to operate as scheduled. Advanced registration is required for all activities. Winter 2021 registration is now open.

John M.S. Lecky UBC Boat House

The John M.S. Lecky UBC Boathouse is open with limited hours and reduced activities. 2021 Winter programs are now available for online registration. Advanced registration is required for all activities.

Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre

Due to the extension of Provincial Health Orders through February 5, the following programs are suspended: Drop-in stick & puck Adult hockey & skating lessons The start of the 2021 Winter Thunderbird Adult Hockey League is delayed pending an update to health orders. Youth skating and hockey lessons continue to run. The Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Sports Centre is open only for registered programs or by appointment only.


UBC Baseball Rose Indoor Training Centre

The UBC Baseball Rose Indoor Training Centre is re-opened with additional precautions for COVID-19. Registration for fall lessons and camps is now open. Advanced registration required for all programs and access.

UBC Camps

Due to precautionary measures against COVID-19, the UBC Camps office is operating with reduced hours and staffing. For all inquiries, please contact us at ubc.camps@ubc.ca. As UBC Camps continues to plan and adapt its operations in response to COVID-19, we have several important updates to share: Public registration for spring break programs is open, and summer break camp registration is open on February 1. Parent/guardians are advised to review the changes & safety measures being implemented for camps. As of May, a new registration system is in use. Please set up a new login to prepare for summer camp registration.

Thunderbird Park, Rashpal Dhillon Track & Field, MacInnes Family Field

Some fields and outdoor spaces are available for informal activity and recreation among members of a single household. Please practice safe distancing measures and observe the posted signs.


Facility Closures

The following facilities are closed for all activities, including rentals:

  • War Memorial Gymnasium
  • Gerald McGavin Rugby Pavilion

Advanced reservations and bookings required for all programs/activities.

Non-medical face masks required when indoors except when exercising

Signs and pathways for designated entrances, exits, line-ups, and traffic throughout buildings

Change rooms & lockers closed. Come dressed for your activity.

Water fountains are limited to refilling of water bottles.

Cover your cough or sneeze with your elbow

Avoid touching your face

Wash hands thoroughly & frequently

Use hand sanitizer if you are unable to wash your hands

Maintain a physical distance of 2m from others

Additional Information

  • Physical distancing will be practiced whenever possible, including: maintaining distance between staff and participants.
  • Visitors are required to wear non-medical masks or face coverings when indoors at UBC Sport Facilities
    • Exemptions include:
      • Persons with an underlying medical condition or disability which impacts the ability to wear a face covering
      • Children 11 years of age or under
      • Persons unable to place or remove a face covering without assistance
    • Requests for exemptions and questions can be sent to info.recreation@ubc.ca
    • Additional information is available on how to wear, use, and store your face covering
  • Rentals and shared equipment are unavailable or limited. Please bring your own equipment for activities.
  • In-person purchases or transactions are cashless and only credit (Mastercard or Visa) or debit is accepted.

What to Expect

Daily Health Screening

All persons visiting UBC facilities or taking part in a program must be able to answer “no” to all of the following questions:

Have you, or members of your household, experienced any flu-like or cold symptoms within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, had close contact with someone who has tested positive for COVID-19, or is awaiting COVID-19 test results within the last 14 days?

Have you, or members of your household, travelled internationally within the last 14 days, including to the USA?

  • If the answer is “yes” to any question on arrival, they will not be allowed to attend any programs for health and safety reasons. A supervisor will follow-up with them through phone or email to issue a credit for programs that are missed.
  • Translated written copies of pre-screening questions will be available to ensure language is not a barrier to understanding and adherence to health and safety measures.

 

Frequently Asked Questions

UBC Athletics & Recreation is working on a plan to safely re-open our sport facilities and re-start our programs. We are working through modifications and new practices that will adhere to the guidelines and recommendations of local health authorities. Although we do not have a precise timeline, we expect that we will re-open through a phased approach that provides recreation opportunities while enacting the appropriate precautions.

UBC Athletics & Recreation is also reviewing refunds and credits to anyone registered for classes, memberships, and rentals during this period. Communication about refunds and credits will be communicated to affected individuals via email.

Please note, individuals with expiring locker rentals at the SRC and ARC will not be required to vacate them during this extended closure. An automatic extension will be provided to all locker rentals until August 31, 2020. If you require access to remove items from your locker, please contact info.recreation@ubc.ca.
