For the enjoyment and safety of all patrons inside the BirdCoop and ARC Fitness Centres, please adhere to the following etiquette information:
Before Entering the Fitness Centres
- No candy, food, gum, or outside drinks allowed.
- Plastic and personal water bottles are allowed.
- Drink water. It is important to stay hydrated to avoid fatigue and dehydration.
- Water fountains are currently open for filling water bottles only.
- Umbrellas, skateboards, bags, etc. will not be allowed in the Fitness Centre.
- UBC Student Card, Faculty/Staff Card, or Recreation Card is required for entry and must be given to staff to scan. Only physical IDs are accepted. In the instance of lost UBC Card, a Government Issued ID will be temporarily accepted for entry, however confirmation must be presented that a new UBC Card has been ordered via UBCcard Online Services.
- Please note memberships are non transferable, and the use of someone else’s membership/UBC ID to access the fitness facilities is prohibited.
Apparel Policies
- Proper athletic shoes and workout clothes must be worn when in the Fitness Centres.
- No jeans or jean shorts allowed.
- Closed toe shoes must be worn at all times and in every area of the Fitness Centres. No exceptions.
Equipment Policies
- Small equipment can be requested from the Fitness Centre desks by asking a Staff member for use in exchange for an ID, and then must be returned after use.
- Only use equipment on which you have been given proper instruction on.
- Fitness equipment cannot be removed from the Fitness Centres.
- Report any equipment malfunctions to the staff immediately to ensure the safety of all patrons.
Proper Etiquette
- Ask staff for assistance if you are unsure how to use a machine or piece of equipment.
- Use bar collars/clips on all bars at all times – please ask floor staff for them.
- Use of personal chalk is allowed at the Olympic Platforms in the BirdCoop only.
- Do not drop weights except on the Olympic Platforms.
- Only bumper plates are allowed to be used on the Olympic Platforms.
- Put away all your weights and plates after use.
- Wipe down all equipment and benches before and after use to be respectful of the next person to use that piece of equipment.
- Keep your workout area clear.
- Please respect time limits listed for specific areas of the Fitness Centres such as the free weights, stretching, and squat racks and platform areas.
- Do not work out between people using benches.
- Please limit your cardio use to 30 minutes (20 minutes at peak times).
- If you feel faint or dizzy, stop, sit down and ask for assistance.
Failure to comply with these rules may result in loss of BirdCoop and ARC Fitness Centre privileges.
Fitness Classes Rules & Etiquette
For the enjoyment and safety of all patrons of Fitness & Classes programs, please adhere to the following information. Please note that:
- Membership Based Programs include: Group Fitness, Boot Camps, Pilates, Spin, and Yoga classes.
- Registration Based Programs include: Dance, Martial Arts, Cardio Conditioning & Strength classes.
Membership Based Programs Rules
- Memberships can be purchased online here.
- All Group Fitness, Boot Camps, Pilates, Spin, and Yoga classes operate on a term basis.
- “Term” is a set of four months; either September – December, January – April, or May – August.
- All Group Fitness, Boot Camps, Pilates, Spin, and Yoga classes operate on a first come, first served basis until capacity of the class has been reached.
- The purchase of a membership does not guarantee a spot in a membership based class.
Membership Based Programs Etiquette
- Patrons must sign in at the respective buildings’ desk before a class begins.
- After signing in, a patron will receive a token at the desk, which then gives them access to the class.
- Tokens will be collected at the door of the class by a member of the Operations or Floor Staff.
