Nutrition Myths Debunked

Nowadays, people are jumping on the “healthy living” bandwagon like never before. It’s easy to forget, however, that there is a multi-billion dollar industry out there making money off of various diet fads, and they are trying their best to keep them trendy, even if there’s not much material behind their marketing. So, before you make decisions regarding your diet, pay attention to these defunked nutrition myths! They might just surprise you.

One of the biggest diet myths of the 21st century. If you’re cutting carbs, it is likely you are simply eating less food, and that is why you are losing weight. However, carbohydrates are found in many foods that humans are meant to consume, such as legumes, many vegetables, and whole grains! You don’t want to miss out on carbs, especially if you are an athlete!

Similar to our last myth, going grain-less is a hugely popular diet trend. It is especially hot right now as many brands and restaurants are offering gluten-free alternatives to their products. But here is the problem with that, and it is two-fold. First, the gluten-free diet is meant for those suffering from Celiac Disease or who have an allergy to grains. Don’t forget grains are one of Canada Food Guide’s main food groups – that means you should eat them! Of course, eating as many whole grains as possible is the best choice. Secondly, this is a problem because healthy people going gluten-free lessen the seriousness of the situation for Celiac patients. Some restaurant chefs must completely sanitize their cooking area AND change their clothes before cooking a gluten-free meal assuming it is for someone with Celiac or an allergy. Sounds like a lot of work just to accommodate someone’s preferred diet.

If I had a big red buzzer, it would beep right now. Consuming less fat, especially saturated or animal fat, is always a healthy decision (this does not mean cutting it out entirely, just keeping it in moderation), but it is easy to forget that many fats are good for you! Nuts, for instance, are a great snack as they contain healthy fats and protein – just try to stay away from the seasoned variety as those contain a lot of salt. Also, fish is very high in Omega-3 fats that are especially good for your brain – they are even used to treat ADHD! Avocados are another great choice.

Can you imagine only drinking a mixture of water, maple syrup, lemon juice, and cayenne pepper for 10 days? Maybe you’ve tried the Master Cleanse, or the Lemonade Diet. It’s been said to clear up skin, detoxify the colon, make you lose 1 pound per day, and blah blah blah. Don’t do it. Here’s why: First of all, these ingredients are very irritating for your digestive tract. Purposefully provoking this area is never a good idea, especially if you want to carry on a life outside of the bathroom. You are also wiping out healthy bacteria that provide your immune system’s defence. What else? You’ll suffer malnutrition, cravings, insomnia, and nausea. Once you go back to your normal diet you will experience bloating, constipation, and 98% of you will gain the weight back. Oh yeah, and the guy who invented this diet was convicted of the 2nd degree murder of one of his patients who died under his care. Need I go on?
