Great Trek 2012 Recap: Running, Rain and Records

The Great Trek, one of UBC’s most historical events took place this past Saturday. Amidst the rain and wet leaves, runners took there mark on a picturesque route through UBC.

The Great Trek holds a significant and rich history here at the University of British Columbia. The run and relay, originally emerged as the Arts ’20 Relay in the year, 1920. It was a race run from Point Grey to the old site of UBC, near Vancouver General Hospital. The Great Trek we know today is a combination of the Arts ’20 Relay and the Great Trek, a 1922 march of UBC students through downtown Vancouver to Point Grey, in which they advocated for more suitable building and facilities at the new University site on Point Grey. UBC REC’s Great Trek, can be run as an individual race of 8 kilometres or a 4 x 2 kilometre relay race.
With many individual participants and relay teams, the competition was stiff this last weekend. The overall individual winners crushed their competition with outstanding times. Both at least a minute ahead of the rest of the pack, Evan Elder, UBC Individual  Overall Male Winner, and Karin Dunner, the UBC Individual Overall Female winner definitely earned their UBC REC Champion shirts! In addition to great victories, Elder’s time was a new record for the Great Trek. “I wasn’t actually aware at the time that I broke the course record, but it’s pretty cool news to receive!” He says.
Runners enjoyed the route, that spanned the length of Main Mall from Stadium Rd all the way to the Rose Garden, the beautiful fall colours and the positivity of the cheerleaders on the edges of the course. “The course was perfect – you got to see a lot of the campus, and you had people cheering you on the entire way” says men’s individual winner, Evan Elder. The race began and ended, as it does each year, at the Great Trek cairn in the centre of Main Mall. To tie in a even more Great Trek history, the cairn was erected following the students’ pilgrimage in 1922 to represent their initiative and resilience.
