UBC TSC Sailing Team CICSA Canadian Nationals

The UBC Thunderbirds Sport Club Sailing Team recently competed in the Canadian Intercollegiate Sailing Association (CICSA) Canadian Nationals. This is the inaugural year for the sailing team to compete as a UBC Thunderbirds Sport Club (TSC). They finished in 2nd place with only 4 points behind Queens University and 15 points ahead of McGill University who place 3rd. The competition was held in Kingston Yacht Club at Queen’s University from October 31st to November 1st. The TSC sailing team was tied for first all of Saturday and most of Sunday’s races.
Their performance this year was a clear improvement from last year as they also placed 2nd but with no hopes of catching up to Queens in first. However this year the TSC sailing team was neck and neck with Queens and won some of the races against them. This was also the first time their coach was with them at a major event which played a role at providing feedback and guidance to improve the team’s performance. The weather was relatively calm on Saturday turning to gusts of 35+ knots on Sunday. The team found the conditions physically demanding as these conditions are uncommon to Vancouver’s light wind and was definitely one of the highlights for the TSC team.
Their season has ended this term, however, in February 2016 UBC is hosting the Sea to Sky Regatta. In the meantime, the TSC sailing team is training to qualify for the Inter-Collegiate Sailing Association (ICSA) Co-Ed and Women’s Nationals at the end of April 2016.
