January Recap: 16th-31st

January was, without a doubt, an action packed month at UBC Recreation Intramurals! Take a look at what we did as we wrap up a successful first month of 2016.

January 16: The Conversation

The Conversation is an exciting new project started by UBC Recreation Intramurals’ Student Engagement team this year. On January 16th, campus’ most influential leaders met up to discuss student engagement and community building. According to Shannen Eikerman, the Director of Student Engagement, one point that was discussed was “a need to move away from competing with each other for engagement and move towards collaboration and building campus culture together.” Overall, The Conversation generated very thoughtful discussion about campus culture and the cute campfire theme added a unique flair to this brand new initiative.

January 21-22: Gladiator

This year’s Gladiator event was highly successful with its debut as a 2-day event (twice as long, twice as fun!). The SRC was decked out in all things icy as we relived the Ice Age with our friendly mascot Sid the Sloth. With games like Hungry Hungry Mammoth and Run that Baby, there was hardly a dull moment.

January 29: Faculty Cup
This year, UBC Recreation Intramurals had the pleasure of working in conjunction with the AMS to bring you Faculty Cup! Festivities and faculty pride kicked off at the Faculty Cup Fair in the Nest where there was inflatable fun and mechanical bull riding. Next, faculties faced off against each other in cutthroat games such as Bubble Soccer and Giant Twister just to name a few. But the fun times didn’t end there! Faculties then travelled to Thunderbird Arena for the Winter Classic where the winning faculty was revealed–FORESTRY!
January 29: Officials Development: UBC Officials Storm BierCraft
Officials Development (OD) hosted an appreciation night for all our lovely leagues officials who dedicate their time and hard work to our leagues program. Without them, leagues would not be running as smoothly as they are! As a gesture of thanks, our OD team partnered up with BierCraft at Wesbrook to give our officials discounted drinks and food! Cheers!
January 31: On the Button Curling Bonspiel
On the Button Curling Bonspiel was a sure crowd-pleaser! All our participants came decked out in their finest plaid and we even spotted some animal onesies in the mix, because why not! Prizes included maple fudge for the most spirited team and homemade axes for the winning teams–it doesn’t get more Canadian Lumberjack than that!
