Welcome to a new section of The Point dedicated to UBC Thunderbirds Sport Clubs, TSC FYI! You might have seen these athletes around campus and have found yourself asking, ‘what are the Thunderbirds Sport Clubs?
The UBC Thunderbirds Sport Clubs (UBC TSC) are Athletics and Recreation’s newest competitive sports stream exclusively for UBC student athletes. Another way to describe UBC TSC is “the in-between of Varsity Athletics and Intramural Sports”. Introduced and launched in September 2015, these teams represent the University at local, provincial, national and international competitions when participating in non-CIS/NAIA (Canadian Interuniversity Sport and National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) sports.

What Sports are part of UBC Thunderbirds Sport Clubs (TSC)?
UBC Thunderbirds Sport Clubs are currently represented 9 sports with 12 teams including: alpine ski, fencingfield lacrosse, Nordic ski, sailing, synchronized swimming, tennis, mens ultimate, women ultimate and wrestling

These teams are pursuing regional, provincial or national championship titles. In 2015, the Sailing Sport Club recently came in 2nd at the Canadian National Championships in November 2015, and the Women’s Ultimate Team placed 3rd in the USA Ultimate National Championships. Coming up for 2016, the Wrestling Team hopes to send their athletes to the National Championships in Fredericton, NB., the Nordic Ski Team will be traveling to the Yukon, Canada for Nationals, Alpine Ski to New York State,
How do these teams differ from Varsity teams?
Aside from competing in non-CIS/NAIA (varsity) sports, these teams are entirely student run. Administrative and some financial support is also available from UBC Athletics & Recreation for things such as: coaches and national championship funding.
