Checking out Free Week: Bendy Flexy

I’ve never been flexible. I know this and accept it…

Today I further proved that while attending the Bendy Flexy class as a part of UBC Recreation’s Free Week . I struggled through even the most basic stretches and poses but after the hour long class ended I felt absolutely great. My body and mind felt revitalized and invigorated. I felt ready to take on the challenges of the day with energy and enthusiasm. I can only imagine how great it would be after a few weeks.

Instructor Carolyn Chan showcasing her skill

Taught by instructor Carolyn Chan, who has a background in Circus, Dance, and Acro Yoga, the Bendy Flexy class is a new spin on traditional yoga.

It focuses on awareness of your own body and learning the limitations of your body’s movements. There is an emphasis placed on casual flexibility and how you can train your body to stretch subconsciously while doing regular, everyday activities.

We went through a set of split stretches that Carolyn would first flawlessly execute and then assist each person in the class achieve a proper position, always pushing your body’s limits but never to a painful or uncomfortable point. She gave constructive feedback and after the class I felt like I had learned more about how to engage my various body parts and muscles.

As an instructor, Carolyn was both very skilled and receptive as well as patient and understanding. She responded to the class and catered her instruction towards our interests.

Overall, I greatly enjoyed the class and would definitely recommend it to anyone interested in improving their flexibility, posture and strength. It is a unique style of yoga and wellness exercise that pushes the body without causing discomfort or pain.

Catch her class on Mondays from 10:15-11:15am and be sure to register here by September 19th or drop in throughout the semester.
