Saturday, Sept 17 Thunderbirds extend 2016 unbeaten streak to 13-games

The UBC Thunderbirds SC (0-0-1) opened their 2016-17 CWFLL season against the Coquitlam Adanacs this past Saturday. The Thunderbirds opened the scoring early, building a 4-1 lead by half-time against the talented Adanacs squad. Four straight goals by the Adanacs in the second half put the Thunderbirds down 5-4 in the final quarter, but senior captain Tomas Syskakis found the back of the net to tie the game with five minutes to play in the game. Sophmore midfielder Jamie Gill won the ensuing faceoff and UBC controlled the play in the offensive zone in the final minutes, but two big saves by the opposing goaltender led to a 5-5 draw in the season opener. Senior attacker Phil Pomeroy led the game with 2 goals, who freshman midfielder Nick Schatz and junior attacker Brendan Lancaster rounded out the scoring with one goal each. The Thunderbirds travel to Victoria next weekend to take on the University of Victoria in their first intercollegiate game of the year.
