Sunday, Oct 2 Unbeaten streak ends at 14-games as Thunderbirds fall to Clan

This weekend, the UBC Thunderbirds SC (1-1-1) fell 16-4 to the 9x PNCLL Conference Champion Simon Fraser University Clan in a fall scrimmage. The loss was the first for the Thunderbirds since December of 2015, and provided great experience for the program, beginning just its third season at UBC.

SFU opened the scoring in the first quarter, amassing a 4-0 lead before 1st year midfielder Spencer Schoen netted his first goal of the year to make it 4-1. After a run by the Clan, Andy Stewart found the back of the net in the second quarter to make the score 9-2. In the second half attacker Jesse Labreque and midfielder Tomas Syskakis scored for the Thunderbirds, while Chris Pomeroy chipped in with an assist. UBC’s defense held strong for much of the game, anchored by senior goaltender Dean Grimm, who faced a barrage of shots all afternoon. Ultimately, the SFU firepower proved to be too much for the Thunderbirds, but they look to regroup with a week off before travelling to Alberta for their fall tournament.
