Fresh off a gap year of racing in the Nor-ams and the Canadian Nationals, Justin Kelly is one of UBC Alpine Ski’s newest team members. Growing up in Bragg Creek, AB, Justin began racing K2 with the Calgary Alpine Racing Club at the age of 13. He continued racing with the club for the rest of his teen years, completing 5 years of competition on their FIS team. It hasn’t been an easy journey for Justin, however – in his third year of FIS competition, he suffered a partial tear in his patellar tendon during pre-season training in Switzerland. After a year and a half of recovery and rehabilitation, he jumped back into FIS competition without missing a beat, providing stiff competition for his adversaries from the minute he got back into the starting gate. This incredible comeback earned him the Alberta Alpine “Cary Mullen Character Award”, which he considers to be one of his proudest ski racing accomplishments to date. Despite aspirations to race for the Alberta Ski Team or for an NCAA Division 1 team at a U.S. college, after a gap year devoted to competing Justin came to the realization that a ski racing career was no longer his sole aspiration. This led him to apply to UBC’s faculty of engineering, where he could continue to race at a high level while also earning a degree from one of Canada’s top universities. When he isn’t studying or skiing, Justin spends as much time outside as possible, whether it be mountain biking – his other passion – or hiking, running, playing hockey, or off-roading. With top FIS results of 9th place (60.18) in SL and 7th place (38.92) in GS in the past season, keep an eye out for this outstanding addition to the team roster this season!
