Ultimate Guide to Lace Up: Participant Guide

Join us to lace up, skate and celebrate at the 9th annual Lace Up for Kids! Help us support BC Children’s Hospital Foundation, and funds raised from this year’s event will support rare disease research. Join UBC students, staff, faculty, and community members to make a difference in a child’s life!

What are the details of Lace Up this year?

  • DATE: Thursday, November 24 2016
  • TIME: 6pm – 11pm
  • WHERE: UBC Doug Mitchell Thunderbird Arena
  • THEME: this year’s theme is…….. UNDER THE SEA!

What should I bring?

  • Remember to bring cash for food, activities and games (where you can buy tickets which give you access to all this)
  • Be sure to come prepared in layers since the arena is kept cool



Where do I go and what do I do when I get there?

Upon arrival, walk through the main doors of the Thunderbird Arena and you’ll see the registration desk. Bag check will be before the Lace Up zone (where the skate rentals are) at the bottom of the stairs before you reach the ice. If you haven’t registered beforehand, you can register on the day of with a minimum of $5 donation.

What happens at Lace Up?

Other than skating, there’ll be lots of games and activities! These include:

  • Two inflatables (bounce tent and slide)
  • Photobooth
  • Cotton Candy Machine
  • Popcorn
  • Cookie Decorating
  • Arts and Crafts
  • Face Painting

And many more!

All activities require tickets to participate ($1 donation per ticket, and 5 tickets are complimentary if you are pre-registered), but you’ll also be entered into a draw for all the activities you participate.


What entertainment is there?

There’ll be performers featuring music and dance including:

  • Wesbrook Youth Band
  • UBC Figure Skating
  • UBC Ballet
  • UBC Acapella
  • UBC Dance Team
  • Dance Horizons
  • Ashley Reyes
  • Thunderbird Dance Team

And to end off the night, we’ll have a DJ and dance party on the ice!

I don’t have my own skates/I brought my own skates

  • We encourage you to bring your own skates! But don’t worry, we do provide skates if you don’t own any
  • Skates are in high demand so you might have to wait on the day of, so if you are really set on skating we recommend you trying to purchase a pair of used skates before hand!

I heard there is an auction!

Yes there is, and there’s actually two auctions happening this year! There’ll be a silent auction ,where auction items will be placed on the table and you’ll have the chance to bid on them from a sheet of paper.

And there’ll be a live auction too, where if you’re interested, you’ll have a paddle with a number on it, and have the chance to bid on items
