UBC TSC Sailing at Canadian Nationals

UBC’s Sailing Team took Thunderbird Sport Club competition to the next level as the first Thunderbirds Competitive Club to make it to Nationals in the 2016-17 season. Traveling east to Kingston, Ontario, the team fought their way to a second place finish overall. Sailing ended their season claiming first in the Frosh/Soph Regatta hosted in Bellingham as well. Meanwhile the Quidditch team also traveled to Bellingham to win their tournament as they geared up to attend the Regional Championships; winning 6 of their 7 matches to take first place overall. Out on the water, the Dragon Boat team has finalized recruitment and laid down their first 100m time trial, with veterans sneaking in under 30 seconds. And on the court, both Men’s and Women’s Tennis Teams have remained undefeated. As first semester comes to a close the Men’s and Women’s Ultimate teams have both concluded tryouts and have started to ramp up for the start of their competitive season along with Alpine Skiing, Nordic Skiing, Synchronized Swimming, and the Equestrian Team. After months of training the teams are ready to represent UBC on the National and International Stage second semester.

Congratulations to our Featured Athlete this Month:

Hanno Kite-Powell (Sailing) This Veteran Senior had a phenomenal month of competition attending three Regattas and proving once again to be an integral member of the Sailing Team. At the Canadian Nationals in Kingston Ontario, Hanno won his fleet, achieving under half the score of the next closest boat and scored a total of 8 first place finishes. His consistent performance was critical in UBC’s second place podium finish. His performance this past month is a testament to his four years as a team leader and hard worker.
