The First Dip at the new UBC Aquatic Centre

This morning, high-performance UBC athletes and community members were the first to jump into the new UBC Aquatic Centre for the First Dip. Special guests and media were invited to tour the $39-million, state-of-the-art facility, which will open to the public on Monday, January 23, 2017.

Among those to be the first to officially jump in to the water at the new UBC Aquatic Center were:

  • James Baylis, Representative of the UBC Water Polo Sports Club
  • Sandra Buckingham, UBC Thunderbird Varsity Swim Team Alumni & UNA resident, and weekly (if not daily) user of the UBC Aquatic Centre
  • Tom Johnson, Head Coach, Swimming Canada High Performance Centre – Vancouver
  • Alvin Lee, UBC Alumni, Competitive Swimmer
  • Amai Campbell Kamangirira, Youth Representative from Musqueam Indian Band, 8 years old, regular at the UBC Pool
  • Jack Kelso, Former Head Coach, UBC Thunderbirds Varsity Swim Program, World Masters Swimming Record Holder
  • Sonia Mann, University Neighbourhood Association resident, 12 years old, regular at the UBC Aquatic Centre
  • Dr. Nestor Korchinsky, UBC Faculty/Alumni, School of Kinesiology; Pioneer of UBC Intramural Program
  • McKenzie Summers, Co-Captain, UBC Thunderbirds Varsity Swim Team
  • Keegan Zanatta, Co-Captain, UBC Thunderbirds Varsity Swim Team
  • Olivia Zawadiuk, Representative of UBC Synchronized Swimming

UBC Athletics and Recreation also hosted “The First Race” at the new facility, including UBC varsity swimmers, past and present.
