UBC TSC February Newsletter 2017

Competitive Highlights

With the second semester well underway, the UBC Thunderbird sport clubs have demonstrated their work ethic and commitment with an impressive showing of results across the board. The UBC Synchronized Swimming team competed in westerns and their top athletes earned a trip across the country to compete in the National Championships. Meanwhile out on the water the UBC Dragon Boat athletes are gearing up for start of their competitive season and Sailing hosted the Sea to Sky Regatta and despite boat troubles on day one rallied together on day two, earning a 1st place finish. While the previous two teams braved the unseasonably cold Vancouver weather, the UBC Women’s Ultimate team headed south to compete in the first regular season tournament in California. The UBC Equestrian sports club followed suit, travelling to the University of Oregon where they had an impressive showing, earning an overall 2nd place finish. On the court, the UBC Women’s Tennis Team is training for the Western Championships and the Men’s team despite defeated UVIC at Westerns, fell to SFU by a single point, not garnering a seat at Nationals this season.

Featured Athlete of the Month

Sport Club: Equestrian

Name: Natalie Nahirney

At the UO Double Hunt Seat Show, Nahirney placed 1st in Open Fences and 1st in Open Flat on both days of competition earning herself the High Point Rider Award and was a critical contributor to the team’s overall success in being named Reserve Champions. Going forward, this rider has qualified to compete in Open Flat at Zone 8 Finals being held at Stanford University where she will compete for a qualification seat at the IHSA Nationals. With the 2016 Nationals already a part of her vast repertoire of experience, this veteran is in the hunt to once again be the only Canadian rider to qualify for the Nationals held in Lexington, Kentucky this May.

Congratulations on your success, Nat!
