On January 20th, the team headed down to Western Washington University to compete in the annual Bellingham Invitational. The one-day tournament had the Thunderbirds playing 4 games in a row, with the wind and cold getting progressively worse throughout the day. Despite these conditions, the team persevered, decisively defeating Whitman, Western Washington, and Washington with scores of 15-2, 12-5, and 11-4 respectively. The last game of the day, against long-time rivals Oregon, proved to be the biggest challenge of the day. The gusting wind, running parallel to the length of the field, made the game a grueling upwind- downwind battle. Ellen Au-Yeung, Judith Yeo, and Joanna Lo stood out on the upwind line, pushing to get valuable upwind breaks. On the other side, Naomi Johnson, Megan Leong, and first-year Monica Hsu played solid defense and calm, composed offense to lock in down-wind points. In the face of the wind, cold, and tired legs, the team closed off the game 11-8, winning the tournament undefeated for the third year in a row.
