Fall Intramural Events Highlights

Semester two is here and UBC Rec participants have already hit the button at curling and survived 2018’s gladiator challenges. We’ve got so many amazing events coming up this semester, including as always UBC’s iconic Storm the Wall in March, but at the start of a new semester, it’s always good to look back on the best moments of the last. September

We welcomed everyone into the new school year at RECESS. Students, faculty, staff, and members of the community stopped in to play awesome games on main mall. Each league set up a fun altered version of their sport like sitting volleyball and mini soccer.

Later in September, teams gathered to hit some home-runs at the FALL SOFTBALL CLASSIC. It was nice to get onto the diamond and extend summer for a little while longer.

We wrapped up the month with one of UBC Rec’s largest and most well-known events, DAY OF THE LONGBOAT. Countless teams came out to bear the tough waters, the Sunday teams in particular hit some wild waves. Even while waiting in line in the chilly wind, everyone was in high spirits, breaking it down in their neon gear to some classic 2000s jams! A huge highlight was seeing President Santa Ono even compete and his team reign champion of the Faculty heat.

October

What’s a better way to deal with the days getting shorter, than brightening up your life with some glow bowling? Our first October Event was GUTTERBALL BOWLING. Teams put on their best white clothes and made their way out to Grandview Lanes for a night of attempting to avoid gutterballs. The night was a total STRIKE!

Next, we learned about the Paralympics and how athletes with various disabilities compete in sports. PARASPORT GAMES is a Rec event that introduces participants to sports like wheelchair basketball! All year round we have drop in wheelchair basketball, so if you missed Paralympic Games or if you had an affinity for the game, be sure to check out a session.

As Halloween crept up on us, we crept up on the first PUMPKIN RUN. Teams gathered at the UBC Farm to race in teams, individually, or just for fun in Pacific Spirit Park!

November

At REC, November started off strong, with LARGEST ZUMBA and DODGEBALL DERBY both rocking the SRC on November 3rd. Beginners and experts came out during the day to dance along as an instructor led them through a fun and energetic routine. That night, the SRC gym brought it all back to high school P.E. class as teams competed in various versions of dodgeball to see which team could duck, cover, and throw best!

We welcomed another new event TENNIS SMASH, where players of all skill levels rallied it out!

On November 16th, UBC REC teamed up with BCCH and the Rare Disease Foundation to host LACE UP FOR KIDS. We spent the night skating and fundraising in support of research for treatments to help kids with Rare Diseases. Together, we raised $23 484 for kids like Mason, who tries not to let his uncommon connective tissue disorder keep him from playing tag, climbing trees, and being a superstar older brother!

Semester 1 ended with a giant splash at WATER WARS. Teams competed in a series of water-based games and challenges at the Pirates of the Caribbean themed event to see who would captain the ship and who would walk the plank.

Thanks UBC Community for a great first semester, like us on Facebook to stay up to date on all of our Semester 2 events!
