The Beginner's Guide to Storm the Wall

What is Storm the Wall?

Storm the Wall has been a lasting tradition at UBC starting in 1978. It has grown to be the largest intramural event in North America with over 800 teams registering! The race itself is similar to a triathlon, but completed as a relay with a team of five. One team member swims laps in the Aquatic Centre, the second does a sprint up to Main Mall, the third bikes around Main Mall, the fourth runs through campus to the wall, and the last teammate joins the team at the wall where every team member will climb over! For more information on the lengths of the race visit here.

How to Register

  1. If you are ready to Storm the Wall, the first step is to make a team of five people (or six if you would like an alternate) and come up with a team name!
  2. Collect all emails and student numbers from teammates and head to the registration site.
  3. Select a clinic time for the week before the race. It is best to find a time when all teammates are all free for about half an hour. The clinic will provide valuable information on rules and race day details. Teams are also given the opportunity to practice going over the wall, which is a huge race advantage! However, it is only mandatory for one team member to attend the clinic.
  4. You will also need to select a race time. There will be different times available depending on whether you’re registering a Just for Fun team or competitive team and if you’re participating in Open/Men’s, Women’s (W2STGN), or CoRec.
  5. Finish up registration by paying the team fee, which is $49.00 this year.
  6. Add your teammates to the roster! All captains will receive a Captain’s Package via email with instructions on finalizing your roster.

Preparing for Race Day

Make sure you have the necessary equipment for the race! It is best to wear short sleeves, close fitting clothing, and sneakers while climbing the wall because you will be grabbing the arms of teammates. Feel free to coordinate outfits!
Be sure to take your bike in for a safety check at More Bikes prior to your race by either visiting the More Bikes store in Wesbrook Village or stopping by the More Bikes tent on race day which will be located by the fountain. If no one on your team has access to a helmet and bike, More Bikes will be lending out bikes on race day, but you’ll need to email ahead of time.

Race Day

After attending your clinic the previous week, your team will have all the logistical information for the race. Be sure to change and store your items ahead of time: the Aquatic Centre has lockers for $1.00, the Student Recreation Centre lends out lockers, or better yet have a friend watch your belongings at the wall! Check-in at least 15 minutes early at your designated location and you will be all set to Storm the Wall!
