Teams to Watch at Storm the Wall 2018

Storm the Wall kicks off this Sunday and there will be hundreds of teams competing across campus and tackling the 12 foot wall out on the plaza. The event spans four days, making it impossible to come out to cheer on every team. This is why we’ve tracked down a few of UBC’s most promising teams to keep an eye out for! Check out the competition and find out what gives each of these teams an edge!

W2STGN Teams

Ain’t No Wallaback Girl

Division: Campus Wide

Three members of this team have been competing together since 2016 when they won the CWD W2STGN championship for the first time. Last year they defended their title and are hoping for the three-peat this year!
What is key to the team’s success?
We’ve been playing our strengths for each leg of the race, while attempting to have an edge of being the quickest over the wall to shave off time.
If you could give one piece of advice to new teams, what would it be?
HAVE FUN. This is an experience unique to UBC and you get to be proud to be competing in this event and excited to tell your friends back home about the crazy thing you did.
Do you have any insider tips for the Wall?
The key is to put full trust into your teammates when you’re headed over the wall. Once you’re there, the adrenaline from the competition kicks in and all of a sudden you’ve made it over.
Come watch Ain’t No Wallaback Girl compete at 4:15 pm on Monday!

The Loo

Division: Pomfret – Science

This Science team has been competing with one another for four years now and hope to make it to Pomfret Finals! They placed second in their division last year, right behind another Science team. Last year, Science took home the W2STGN Triple Crown, meaning they placed first in Day of the Longboat, the Pumpkin Run, and Storm the Wall.
What is key to the team’s success?
The hand illustrated “The Loo” t-shirts definitely give us an advantage, but also just trust – we’re not worried about falling at the wall because we trust each other.
If you could give one piece of advice to new teams, what would it be?
Don’t give up if you’re behind because you can make up for it at the wall!
Do you have any insider tips for the Wall?
It helps to think about what order you’re going to climb the wall in so that you’re prepared on race day. We base it off of strength and height, but also how tired people might be when they get to the wall.
Come watch their heat at 12:25 pm Sunday and W2STGN Pomfret Finals at 3:00 pm Wednesday!

ADPI 3

Division: Hindmarch – Alpha Delta Pi

Although the individuals on this team are competing together for the first time, Alpha Delta Pi has won the Hindmarch AND Divisional W2STGN final for two years in a row and they’re hoping they can bring home the win again this year!
What is key to the team’s success?
The key to success is DEFINITELY the wall (but shh! don’t tell anyone). If your team is strong in the rest of the race and good at the wall you’re set.
If you could give one piece of advice to new teams, what would it be?
Have fun, have your friends cheer you on and don’t take the bike corners too quickly!
Do you have any insider tips for the Wall?
The wall spotters will tell you to double base (two people) but it’s way faster to single base 😉
Come out to see their heat at 4:20 pm Monday! Hindmarch W2STGN Finals will take place at 3:10 pm Tuesday.

Open/Mens Teams

Beta Theta Tilted Towers

Division: Hindmarch – Beta Theta Pi

While parts of the team change every year, a core group from this fraternity has been competing together for four years. For the past two years the team has won Open/Mens Hindmarch Finals and in years prior they have consistently advanced to the finals.
What is key to the team’s success?
We are very comfortable around each other and know our individual strengths and weaknesses. We know what to expect and can therefore plan well in advance. This especially comes in handy when climbing the wall.
If you could give one piece of advice to new teams, what would it be?
We have seen teams lose in Semi-Finals by taking too long to climb the wall, despite being there well ahead of other teams. Make sure you have a planned order for getting over. By the time you’re on your second or third race it’ll become second-nature. We cannot stress how vital this is.
Do you have any insider tips for the Wall?
Have two bases with their backs to the wall, and take turns going over. A strong person should go first so they can help the others over from the top. Once you get over, come back to the front to help the rest up (during heats or Semi-Finals). For Open/Mens Finals make sure your last guy is athletic enough to make the jump. You’ll need to plan ahead for this.
Come watch this team compete at 2:10 pm Sunday or come cheer on Open/Mens Hindmarch Finalists at 3:05 pm Tuesday!

One More Time

Division: Campus Wide

With some additions and changes over years, this team will be competing together for the fourth time! Their stacked lineup consists of 2017 Ultra Iron Person champions and Iron Legend hopefuls.
What is key to the team’s success?
The key to success is having a team that is pretty good at every portion of the race, and having no real weak spots.
If you could give one piece of advice to new teams, what would it be?
Make sure you squat low for your teammates to make it easier for them to climb. As soon as you’re done your portion of the race, go straight to the wall. The race is a lot faster than you think.
Do you have any insider tips for the Wall?
Try to single base, it’s a lot faster than having two people putting up one person at a time. For people jumping at the wall during Open/Mens Finals, try get your first foot high on the wall.
Come cheer on One More Time at 2:10 on Sunday!
In addition to these fierce teams, there will be plenty of other memorable moments during Storm the Wall. Come out Sunday for our Community Festival, Tuesday to watch some Semi Finals, and Wednesday for Final and Special Olympic heats. Just for Fun teams will be competing each day and we’ll be running the Wall Challenge at 12:00 pm every day during Storm the Wall! See you this week!

Embrace the Storm! Join us in cheering on our amazing participants from March 25 to 28 in front of the Nest.
