UBC and BEYOND: Storm Day 1

As anyone who came out today knows, our first day of Storm The Wall 2018 was AMAZING! We kicked off this year’s 4-day event with (mostly) clear skies and huge smiles.
The BEST part about day one of Storm is that it falls on a Sunday…and everyone knows SUNDAY is FUNDAY. Having the event include a weekend day means that we got to see a ton of people from the broader UBC community, who might not be able to take time out of their week to come out!

Because Storm is such an iconic event, people beyond the university’s students, staff, and faculty are still eager to participate. Today, we lost our voices cheering on our community members and our alumni in their very own heats. Storm is the kind of event that reels people back in even after they graduate, as participants, spectators, and volunteers!
BUT not only did we see “UBC and BEYOND” race, we also got to see them having a blast. We had so many supportive spectators out today who danced and cheered as the racers sweated it out. There’s not a lot sweeter than seeing families hugging after their child, sibling, or parent got over the wall.

And of course, what can make an event great without a festival? A bunch of our community members, whether they competed or not came out to our 4th annual fun-for-all-ages Storm the Wall Community Festival. The festivities included face-painting, magicians, crafts, games, and a rock-climbing wall. One of the best parts of the festival was seeing the fully decked-out STORMtroopers walking about!

Day one was awesome. We can’t wait for three more days of excitement from our participants and spectators! Take a break from your busy week to come out and watch teams and individuals tackle the 12 ft monster. You might even get to see someone take on the cycling leg on a unicycle (hint: someone did that today). Can’t make it in person? Follow all the action alongside us on Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook, and Twitter!
