What You Can’t Miss in Term 2: Events Edition

Wondering what events are happening this term? Still sad about that really cool event you found out about after it happened? Can’t stop thinking about all the fun you had in Term 1? UBC Recreation Intramurals has your back! Here is a complete list of all the amazing events we have planned for Term 2.

On the Button Curling Bonspiel

What the heck is a bonspiel? It’s a curling tournament… and you don’t want to take this event for granite! Whether it’s your first time on the ice or you’re a seasoned sweeper, this tournament is a great way to try a classic Canadian pastime. The Richmond Curling Club will host all sweeping beauties and rolling stones in teams of 4-6 people on the evening of January 13th.

Gladiator is an iconic event that is jam-packed with action, team challenges, guaranteed laughter, and large inflatables! Intrigued? This event is rather “unconventional” and great for students who want to try something a little different from their average choice of exercise. Gladiator offers only competitive team options, and only offers the CoRec category. Teams of 6-10 people must have a CoRec Ratio of a maximum of half their team composed of self-identified men. This means it is a great event for a large group. Sign up with your friends, classmates, or club to see if you will be crowned UBC’s next Gladiator on  January 17th!

Faculty Cup

Proud of your faculty and proud to represent it? Always felt a little competitive with your friends in a different one? This event is the one for you! Faculty Cup is a tournament brought to you by AMS and UBC Recreation, in which 14 faculties/schools are pitted against each other. Each will compete in sports, spirit, and academics to fight for this year’s #1 faculty. Think you have what it takes? Register to reserve your spot in the one-day, campus-wide event that takes place on February 1st!

UBC Yoga Rave

Did your New Years Resolutions include do yoga, reduce stress, save money, or have more fun? Luckily, participating in UBC Yoga Rave means you can check-off all four! This FREE event, open to students, staff & faculty, and community members, combines yoga and a blacklight dance party for an evening of stretching out and letting loose. Be sure to arrive at Totem Park Ballroom 15-30 minutes before UBC Yoga Rave on February 7th to reserve your spot since it is always a popular event!

Howl at the Moon Volleyball

Trade Netflix in for knee pads on March 1st because this event is perfect for the night owls that find themselves up too late and doing too little! Howl at the Moon Volleyball features a CoRec reverse 4s format and is perfect for those looking to test their team’s skills on the court. Teams of 4-6 people play volleyball matches in this reverse 4’s tournament in the Student Recreation Centre Gyms. There are four time slots your team can register for throughout the night with playoffs starting at 1:00AM!

Affectionately named TriDu, this event is BC’s longest running triathlon. It is also one of the first triathlons offered in the year, which means it is the perfect way to kick off the 2019 race season! The swimming segment of this triathlon takes place indoors in the competition tank of the UBC Aquatic Centre. The event takes place on UBC’s beautiful campus and you’ll enjoy professional race timing and friendly volunteers to keep you safe on route. But don’t be intimidated – there are race options for first-timers, adults, and youth! Mark your calendars for March 9th because we’re ready to get our triathlon… on.

Ah, yes… last but not least: Storm the Wall. Ask anyone who has done it and they will tell you it’s a UBC bucket list item. This exciting and iconic event involves a swim, sprint, bike, run, and finally climbing THE WALL. You can try and tackle the wall solo, as an ironperson, or bring a team to take on the challenge. This three-day event runs from March 24th-27th and is all about strength, perseverance, and teamwork. There are multiple levels of competition available, whether you are looking to just do it for fun or have your sights set on becoming the next ironlegend. It’s the perfect way to end off the school year and feel an even greater sense of accomplishment for the classes you passed, things you tried, and friends you made along the way at UBC!
