UBC Women’s Tennis Dominates Against Southern Neighbours

The UBC Women’s Tennis Team after their win against the Whitman Blues

 

The UBC Women’s Tennis Team dialed up two more victories this past weekend, in Portland, OR. During their second ever trip to compete against NCAA schools in the US, the Thunderbirds dominated the weekend with a 7-0 and 5-2 win over the Lewis & Clark Pioneers and Whitman Blues.

On Friday night, the Thunderbirds started with a force, by winning all four doubles matches against Lewis & Clark. The No.1 and 6 singles, Jessica Silva and Luna Crawford, both polished off their matches with 6-3, 6-0 wins. At No.3 and 4 Michelle Lim and Abi Heninger also attained convincing victories with 6-2, 6-2 scores. While rookie, Madi Fan at No.2 closed out her match without dropping a game. UBC added another victory with No.5 Martina Capelli winning 6-1, 6-2.

On Saturday, UBC maintained momentum against the Whitman Blues. The Thunderbirds began the morning with securing wins by the No.1 team of Silva and Fan, the No.2 team of Yizhen Song and Capelli, and the No.3 team of Heninger and Lim. In singles, Silva made a comeback from a first set loss to win 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 at No.1. While Fan steam-rolled through her second match, winning 6-0, 6-2, followed by Capelli’s, Lim’s, and Nina Erdevicki’s wins. At No.4 Heninger almost attained the W, but came up short with a tough, tight, 3-set loss of 6-7, 6-4, 8-10.

The Thunderbirds are now practicing hard for the Western Canadian Championship which will be on March 2nd from 3-6pm at the UBC Tennis Centre. Come support while they take on the Prairie champs for a spot at Nationals.
