On March 9th at the UBC TriDu collegiate heat, part of the Western Canadian University Triathlon Circuit, triathletes from three competing teams battled it out: UBC TSC Triathlon, AMS UBC Triathlon Club, and the UVic Triathlon Club.
One could not have hoped for better weather, judging by the snowfall on campus just days before the competition. There was beautiful, sunny, 6 degree weather which is saved all triathletes some time when it came to layering up or making tight turns.
In the Women’s category: Kiah Wheeler of UVic won first place with a time of 1:10:27, beating her previous time on the course by a full 5 minutes. Abby Edison of TSC won second, with a time of 1:16:38 on her first triathlon. Close behind is Olivia Vihant of TSC in third, with a time of 1:17:27 on the shortest distance triathlon she has ever done.
In the Men’s category: Tom Watson of TSC won first place with a time of 1:02:17. Jaron Piercy of TSC won second, with a time of 1:05:37. Tatsuki Watanabe of UVic won third, with a time of 1:09:02.
UBC TSC Triathlon is happy that the race brought out triathlon clubs in the area, especially the UVic Triathlon Club, who had to put aside a weekend to travel to UBC. TSC Triathlon hopes that participation in the event will grow by a few more clubs in the following years, making competitive triathlon at a collegiate level in western Canada and the United States become more prevalent.
