Oh Canada! UBC TSC Triathlon Celebrates… with a 4km Swim!

For the second year in a row, some of the TSC Triathletes celebrated Canada Day with an endurance swim challenge. Jimena Salinas came 7th in the overall women’s category with a time of 1:05:57, April St. Pierre came in right behind her in 8th place with a time of 1:06:15, Ashley Lloyd came in 16th at 1:12:20, who was closely followed by TSC Triathlon Alum, Pamela Villavicencio, at 1:13:50.

Every year this race is hosted by the Vancouver Open Water Swimming Association at Sasamat Lake. The morning started with over 300 athletes gathered at the beach to sing Oh Canada. This year, the team was relieved to wake up to sunshine and a comfortable water temperature of 20°C – much warmer than the sea they’ve been training in! The relief was short lived for some, however, since a few of the athletes struggled to find the finish line when the sun was in their eyes. They’ll be shopping for tinted goggles before the next race!

The event was a fun morning for all since the team’s coach, Andrew Powell, raced the 4km distance and a few family members of the triathletes raced the 1km, 2km and 4km distances. After the race there was a prize draw, Belgian waffles, and other excellent snacks. Jimena and Ashley were given delicious Terra bread to take home for lunch time.

The team would like to thank the Vancouver Open Water Swimming Association for putting together such a fun event and to everyone who came to support the athletes. Next up, catch the TSC Triathlon Sport Club racing at the Kelowna Apple Triathlon this weekend, on July 7th.
