This update is to provide context on the temporary and partial closure of the 25m Recreation Tank (evening of Sept. 18 to Sept. 25 inclusively). It was identified late in the day on Wednesday Sept. 18 that a skylight above the 25m Recreation Tank was shattered. Whereas we can appreciate that the temporary and partial closure of the space within the UBC Aquatic Centre had been an inconvenience, please know that user and staff safety remains our foremost priority. The management team worked with internal and external contacts to assess the situation and only once we received written confirmation from the appropriate engineer were we comfortable re-opening the areas immediately below the skylight (Thursday Sept. 26).
Patrons of the UBC Aquatic Centre can rest assured that the situation has been identified, inspected and facility management have received confirmation that structure, as it currently stands, is suitable for the short-term, and that the team is working to have it replaced as soon as feasibly possible.
The UBC Aquatic Centre is committed to the safety of facility users and thank you again for your patience and understanding.
Visitors are reminded and encouraged to consult the facility website and Drop-in Schedule prior to any visit.
