For all of you who thought that we we’re dead (we hope you didn’t), we have a special Halloween themed blog post to update you on our latest events!
The month of October was training heavy. We’ve had consistent practices on Tuesdays, Thursdays and on the weekends. Generally, on the weekends we go for longer runs or hikes to get our volume in! The weekdays are reserved for intensity sessions and shorter easy runs paired with core. Many of our athletes are hitting the Bird-Coop (the gym) to get pumped up (literally) for the season. Other cross training regimes include climbing/bouldering, swimming, pool running and spinning at Method Indoor Cycling with the UBC TSC Cycling Club. Having the privilege to interact with the community and other teams is very important to us and we are pumped to be able to use Method’s studio space on Monday evenings.
The UBC Fall Classic running race was October 26th and many of our members ran the 10km and half marathon. A total of 7 Nordic ski athletes raced, including Graeme Bowers, Madison Brown, Michael Murdoch and Mykal Bakker-Westeinde all of whom hit some PBs! Thanks to all that participated!
Another shout out to everyone that helped support the team at out Krispy Kreme fundraiser! All the money we made will be used to cover race and travel costs so that we can get more people skiing!
In other news, we had a sweet Halloween themed practice! Practice attendees dressed up in costumes and raced through an obstacle course consisting of 12 obstacles on the UBC track (as depicted below.
We had a great turn out for the relays: 6 teams of 2 people! In the end, our exec team of Claire Grall and Mykal Bakker-Westeinde (slightly stacked) walked away with the fastest time.
A huge shout out to our coach Chelsea Little for organizing the event and always showing up to practices with such enthusiasm! We really appreciate all the work you do for the team and are pumped for a fun ski season under your leadership.
There’s lots going on in November including some potential pre-season skiing on the Callaghan Gold track (snow and school permiting), a bar night and TSC dodgeball drop in tournament both hosted by TSCAC! Keep up to date with our latest on our Instagram (@ubcnordicskiing) and stay tuned for our Christmas edition post in January!
