The UBC TSC Women’s Tennis Team kicked off their 2019-20 season this past weekend, hosting home matches against the University of Calgary and the University of Alberta at the UBC Tennis Center. The Thunderbirds captured a convincing 5-1 opening win against the Calgary Dinos, but fell short to the Alberta Pandas, 6-1; an overall promising start to the season.

Rookie Sara Zupanc and 4th year Yizhen Song playing no.2 doubles.

The competitive lineup featured three rookie players, Sara Zupanc, Sofia Kresta, and Isabel Evans, who each stepped up to the challenge in their maiden intercollegiate matches, picking up at least one win each!

On Saturday November 9th, the T-birds faced off against the Dinos, dominating in doubles by not dropping a match. At the no. 5 and 6 positions, rookies Kresta and Evans had convincing wins at 6-2,6-1. While no. 4 Michelle Lim and no. 2 Jessica Silva also comfortably took their matches at 6-0,6-1 and 6-2,6-1 respectively. The UBC Women finishing with an overall 5-1 win.

No. 1 doubles team; Jessica Silva and Madi Fan.

On Sunday November 10th, the Thunderbirds were back at it against the Pandas for a rematch of last season’s Western Championships. The team fell short with a 6-1 defeat, but took some W’s with them. Madi Fan and Silva won at the no. 1 doubles spot, 8-2, and Silva also captured the no. 1 singles, 6-3,6-4. The T-birds fell just short in a couple extremely close matches, including both no. 5, Kresta, and no. 6, Abigail Heninger, who battled to reach third set superbreakers.

The Thunderbirds will return to action in January, kicking off the new year by hosting the BC Regional Championships against Simon Fraser University and the University of Victoria, at the UBC Tennis Center.

Getting pumped with a team cheer before the matches.
