I haven’t participated in UBC recreation programs before, but during the program I registered for adult swimming 100 and finished it. I did almost no physical exercise on a regular basis before the program. It changed a lot since the program. I print out the “Mood and Activity Diary” every week and easily reach the 150 min target. Usually it goes to 200 – 300 min per week but not very intense exercise.

I grew up as someone that was neither good at nor liked to exercise or play sports. My mindset has also changed since the program. I enjoyed many of the recreation programs I tried and found them powerful as well as beautiful. Now I know physical exercise can be fun and I have a positive attitude towards it when I have to exercise.

I’ve actually started to move more during and after the program. That starts after my first class knowing that the recommended minimum exercise time is 150 min per week, which is easier than I thought before. Also, I knew exercise was good for mental well-being before the program, but it actually never had such effect on myself. The instructor let me know the effect will not show so fast. After I tried for about a month, I can feel my mood goes up after exercise. This is also one thing that I am thankful to this program and makes me want to keep the habit of exercise.

With regard to our Monday classes, like 50% of the information was new to me so it enhanced my understanding of how one can work on well-being, which pushed me to take them into actions. The nutrition class introduced me to some new food (like bell pepper) which I now add into my daily meal. I also enjoyed the dancing classes on Wednesdays, especially the hip-hop one.

If I have to name one thing that is the best, I think is that the program does its job exactly: I move more after I learn more. And I am more confident to say I want to keep this habit. This is a great and worthy program for physical exercise beginners! You will refresh your mindset for physical activity and keep doing it willingly. You will also be provided a chance to try more than 15 different activities in UBC and find the ones you like. None of them are too intense for beginners so don’t be terrified. Besides you learn self-care techniques and win lovely prizes by participating the program.
