We came. We raced. We left (our mark). The UBC Nordic Ski team raced at BC Cup #1 in Salmon Arm, BC this past weekend. Fresh off our Christmas vacation, we took home 9 medals and had many more killer efforts.
Notable performances include, Ingrid Tveten taking home gold in the Open Women’s Classic Sprint and in the Senior Women’s 6km Skate, Mykal Bakker-Westeinde taking bronze in the U23 Men’s Classic Sprint and Claire Grall and Katia Lumb both taking bronzes in the 6km skate in the U23 Women’s and U20 Women’s categories respectively. All results from this past weekend can be found here.
Aside from some stellar results, we have some entertaining highlights from the weekend: Wassim got a true taste of nordic skiing when he got too excited on the final uphill of the sprint course and took a tumble and tasted the mountain; Chloe’s minivan didn’t want to leave the race course, which brought the team closer while they pushed her out of the icy parking lot; and driving home through a major snow storm added a dash of anxiety and a sprinkle of adrenaline to top off the weekend.
We would like to thank our amazing coach Chelsea Little and volunteer parent, Brent Murdoch, for waxing all of our skis this weekend. This was no easy feat and we cannot thank you guys enough! Another shout out to all of the racers who gave it their all, particularly Wassim Ghazi and Lucas Friesen who raced for the first time ever this past weekend!
