The UBC Thunderbirds Artistic Swimming Sport Club is fresh off their first competition of the season. The whole club consisting of 30 athletes and 3 coaches headed to a chilly Edmonton AB for the CUASL Western Championships.
The competition started off strong with both of UBC’s Advanced teams showing off their skills in Advanced Team Finals. The UBC ‘Shark’ Team captured gold in this category, claiming the title ‘Best in the West’ for the third year in the row. The UBC ‘Blue Team’, placed fourth, with a strong swim from the 5-person team.
Timothy Yaroshuk represented UBC in the advanced solo category. This was Tim’s 5th year competing in the solo category, but his first year in the advanced stream. Tim placed 5th, with an amazing swim to the soundtrack of Good Omens.
The competition continued with the Novice Team competition. Both teams did amazing with the UBC ‘Supermodel’ Team taking second place and the UBC ‘Kingsman’ Team following close behind in third.
Natalie Hays represented UBC in the Novice Solo category, placing first in the event. It was Natalie’s third year competing with UBC as a novice athlete.
UBC’s Penny Raymond and Triyana Payne came in second place in Novice Duet. It was the pair’s first year with UBC and their first year swimming as a duet.
A huge thank you goes out to the University of Alberta for hosting the meet. It was a fantastic (and cold) competition that has all of UBC’s athletes pumped and ready for Nationals here at home.
