We understand that during this unprecedented situation, you may be feeling stressed, or worried - and while practicing physical distancing, may also lead you feeling isolated. This is why this session will take you through the Thrive 5! Join us for a 30-minute fitness class led by a UBC Recreation Instructor, followed by a 30-minute interactive session led by Carlie McPhee from the UBC Wellness Centre. This workshop will cover five simple, easy-to-implement ways to help prosper and maintain good mental health.

Carlie McPhee

Health Promotion & Education Coordinator, UBC Wellness Centre

Carlie is a health promotion professional with a background in kinesiology, health education, sexual health promotion, and public health resource development. Carlie has worked in recreation, and government health promotion positions for many years supporting folks to live healthy and fulfilling lives. Carlie joined UBC earlier this year, and coordinates the Peer Health Educator program, and provides support to other wellbeing projects that benefit UBC students.

The United Way

We're excited to announce that this month's workshop is in partnership with the United Way. The United Way is an annual campaign that focuses on prevention and addresses the underlying causes of critical social issues such as poverty and social isolation before they become crises.

If you would like to donate and you are either a UBC student or a UBC community member, be sure to include "UBC" in the comments of your donation to make sure that your kind offering goes towards the dollars raised for the UBC United Way campaign.

This session covers all things self-care! With the start of the term, we know how overwhelming it can be, so set aside some time and join us to find out some tips and tricks to help support your wellbeing.  This workshop will consist of a 30-minute fitness class led by a UBC Recreation Instructor, followed by a 30-minute Q&A led by Miranda Massie from UBC HR.

Miranda Massie, ME'd

Workplace Wellbeing Practices & Learning Consultant, UBC HR

Miranda has a background in psychology, as well as health and adult education and is a Mental Health Commission of Canada certified instructor (Mental Health First Aid and The Working Mind). Miranda's work is grounded in health promotion and she believes in empowering employees to make informed principles that can positively impact their individual wellbeing.

This session will consist of a 30-minute "High Fitness Class" led by UBC Recreation Instructor Cora, followed by a 30-minute Q&A session with UBC Dietitians, Tamara Paetsch and Melissa Baker!

Tamara Paetsch, RD

Food & Nutrition Coordinator

Tamara Paetsch completed her nutrition degree and dietetics training at the University of Manitoba. She is passionate about helping students build healthy lifestyles, and ensuring students have positive and safe dining experiences at UBC.


Melissa Baker, MHSc, RD

Manager, Nutrition and Wellbeing

Melissa Baker completed her dietetics degree at UBC and a Masters of Health Science at Ryerson University in Toronto. She is an AllerTrain Certified Master Trainer, and workds hard to support students at UBC with allergies. Melissa is passionate about ensuring the university residence environment supports a healthy lifestyle and helps young adults create healthy habits for life. Melissa has worked in many different areas including clinical, retail, industry, media, HR and consulting.
