After an intense virtual tryout period, the TSC Triathlon team is excited to announce our new athletes for the 2020/2021 school year. Last week, we held our COVID-safety meeting, where we outlined our safety protocols for in-person practices starting soon! We have already held two virtual practices, including a dry-land swim workout with our swim coach, Jaren, and a virtual spin with our head coach, Andrew!
Here is why some of our athletes joined the team this year and what they are looking forward to!
Emily Nold (3rd year Marketing)
“At the beginning of the pandemic, I made a promise to myself that I was going to run a half marathon. To my surprise, running was not as bad as I thought it was – I actually liked it. Then I got asked to participate in a bike fundraiser at the end of the summer, and I thought, why not go all the way and add swimming in as well? I started training and realized it would be a lot more fun if I joined a team. I love to challenge myself and the triathlon team felt like the perfect challenge to me. I am excited to make friends on the team. During the tryout period, everyone was so supportive. I cannot wait to see what it will be like at practices! I am hyped about joining a supportive community of athletes who are crazy enough to want to do triathlons as well.”
Alair Ang (2nd year Commerce)
“Hey everyone! I’m Alair and I’m super stoked to be part of the triathlon team this year. I’m a second-year commerce student intending to specialize in Finance and pursue a Minor in Music. After running cross country and track throughout high school, I really wanted to take on a new sport entering university. I was introduced to the world of triathlon last year and was hooked to the sport ever since. Despite this unconventional year, I can’t wait to start training, create memories, and most importantly have fun with my new team!”
Joanne Callow (1st year MSc in Rehabilitation Science)
“I just moved to Vancouver so I thought joining the team would be a great way to make some new friends! It is also one of the more COVID friendly sports teams to keep me active during the pandemic. I am most looking forward to seeing the improvement in myself and my teammates, and having a little friendly competition.”
Ethan Ashley-Cheetham (4th year Kinesiology)
“Hi! My name is Ethan and I’m a fourth-year student in the School of Kinesiology. This will be my second year on the team. Growing up as a competitive swimmer, I missed the feeling of support a team provides, and having taken up cycling in university I thought I would complete the trifecta and give triathlon a try! After joining TSC Triathlon I felt like part of a family of motivated individuals who support each other through every practice and beyond. Studying from home this year, TSC has allowed me to maintain a strong connection with UBC even while being far away. I can’t wait to start training with the new team!”
