Run/Roll/Walk Series Blog – Week 6!

Welcome to the Run/Roll/Walk Series blog! Hello everyone! We hope that you’ve all had an awesome week of “running to the rhythm”, and congratulations to last week’s winner Eva and Helen!

This past week, we challenged you to brave the ever-changing Vancouver weather and run – but with a twist! Your favorite Run/Roll/Walk team took to our music libraries to bring you some specially curated playlists to guide your runs. Our short and sweet playlists featured pump-up music in the genres of Pop, 2000’s hits, Rock, Hip-Hop and Country.

Now, I’m no runner. I mean, if it weren’t for the friendly competition that comes with seeing my fit friends post their runs on Strava, I may have never tried out the seemingly torturous activity. At the beginning of September, I went on my first real attempt at a run. I managed to make it 6km, all the while receiving ‘side eyes’ from pedestrians, as I coughed from a cocktail of exhaustion and good ol’ forest fire smoke. That run was so unenjoyable that I thought I wouldn’t run again…. until last week’s challenge!

Storytime: Last Thursday I accidentally fell asleep at 8pm and therefore woke up at 3:30am. Now, I’m not someone who is blessed with the ability to just roll over and fall back asleep. So, there I laid, wide awake, feeling oddly like I was supposed to be boarding some 6am flight. Looking out at the moon, I decided I would take advantage of the anomaly that is waking up at 3:30am and would walk the 20 blocks down to the beach for sunrise. However, next thing I knew the sky was quickly brightening and I was still in my PJs. I regretfully realized I wouldn’t have time to walk to the beach – I needed to……run. Thankfully, I didn’t need to waste time queuing up music. I laced up my sneakers, threw on the “2000’s hits” playlist and ran out the door to the beach. How was the sunrise you might ask? Well…I couldn’t tell you. I still missed it. BUT, at least I got to test my lung capacity by singing all of the words to Kanye and Estelle’s “American Boy” on the way down.      – Kyra Croft

Week 6

This week, we are celebrating the century old tradition of the Great Trek relay run, by challenging you to run either 5km or 10km! The Great Trek began in 1922, when UBC students marched through Downtown Vancouver to the Point Grey, to protest the construction halt of the UBC Point Grey campus. Their passion for a better space to learn was successful, and the government approved the continuation of UBC’s construction. The Great Trek is one of the key reasons our campus is now located on the beautiful, traditional, ancestral and unceded territory of the Musqueam people. More information about the Great Trek, and the history of running within the Musqueam community, can be found in this week’s email, next week’s blog, and on the UBC Recreation website! Happy running!

For more details follow the Facebook event page and don’t forget to email your results to im.events1@ubc.caGood luck with your challenge this week!

Once again, on behalf of the entire team, welcome and thank you for joining this community!
