Although Covid-19 restrictions have altered our 2020-21 season plans, we are excited to introduce our coaches and new captains! For new players this blog post will serve as a look into the makeup of this year’s leadership committee. Despite the hardships that come with leading during an unusual season, the captains represent a fantastic squad of four returning t-bird players. Akaya Blair, Oliana Chan, Delaney Ignatieff, and Samantha Roche were nominated and voted on by the 2019-20 roster. Having four captains for the unpredictable season that lays ahead is essential to balance out leadership responsibility. All of the captains have past and or current experience as executives for the team. The captains are joined by returning coaches Jennifer Kwok and Ellen Au-Yeung to lead the program this year.
Leadership has collectively decided to not hold tryouts this season and instead support a larger program split into small practice squads. As we all hurdle through Covid-19 and the restrictions in place, who knows where we will find ourselves at the end of this year’s season. For now, the plan is to hold socially distanced practice with an emphasis on fitness for small cohorts of players. We hope to structure our practices in accordance with TSC approval and B.C. health restrictions. As time progresses we are planning to increase the cohort size of practice groups with the ultimate goal of scrimmaging.
Aiming to begin practice cohorts in February, the program has been virtually active through Instagram, Facebook, and strava. The executives are also planning social events on zoom that will involve the whole program for team bonding and fun!
Stay tuned on our social media platforms for updates!
Looking forward to seeing you all on the field or on zoom soon!
