Comic Book Creations in partnership with Kids Take Over UBC
Re-Watch on YouTube   |   Suggested Ages: 8 – 10

This short workshop (approx. 30 – 45 minutes) is a fun introduction to the wacky world of comics. Join Alyssa, comic creator extraordinaire, as she demonstrates how to turn a single piece of paper into a 6-page comic book, no staples required. We’ll turn ideas into colourful, communicative creations, and participants will practice finding their own unique style. No previous experience necessary; emphasis will be on storytelling and building confidence.

What to bring: plain white paper, a pencil, and scissors are required. Other colouring tools (pencil crayons, felt markers) are optional.

Alyssa is a comic artist and alumni of UBC’s Creative Writing program. She’s drawn “diary comics”—one doodle every single day—for over two years now, and is coming up to her one thousandth comic. She draws everything from her feelings to her dreams to her breakfast. Alyssa has presented her work at the Vancouver Writer’s Fest and at UBC’s annual MFA conference and taken part in various panels exploring the wonderful world of comics.

The 4th annual Kids Take Over UBC! returns with the theme “Home is where the art is!” and features three days of free online programming that can be enjoyed from anywhere. Open to families at UBC, and the wider audience from Metro Vancouver and beyond, the family day celebration brings together over 14 different UBC departments and community partners to offer participatory musical events and performances, hands-on workshops, family-friendly theatre and much more! And it’s FREE!
