Keep Moving – Five Virtual Studio Classes to Try this Move UBC Month!

The month of February marks the start of Move UBC month: a collaborative university-wide annual initiative to promote increased physical activity and reduced sedentary time. UBC Wellbeing and UBC Recreation have worked closely to put together challenges and events to encourage students, staff, and faculty to be physically active throughout the entire month of February and beyond. While most of those offerings have been moved to a digital space this year, it doesn’t mean they’ll be any less effective – it’s actually more important than ever to get out of your seat and get moving for both your mental and physical health. No matter where you are in the world, there are so many ways to incorporate movement into your daily routine.

In the interest of helping support and protect the local fitness industry within Vancouver, we’ve compiled a list of some of the favourite online fitness opportunities of UBC students that you could try out this month!

 

1. Jaybird

Jaybird studio is a gem of fitness find Yaletown. They got their start offering unique candlelit classes in their infrared heated that drew inspiration from yoga, pilates, barre and everything in between. They’re currently offering all four of their signature classes – The Build, The Burn, The Booty, and The Balance–  and more virtually, with your first seven days free! 

 

2. Daniela Dib’s DibFit

Vancouver-based celeb Daniela Dib’s program DibFit was built on the promise of “bringing community right to your living room”, something that a lot of us may be missing in our pandemic fitness routines. She has also been an avid supporter of UBC Recreation’s’ physical activity initiatives, even offering a free movement break for us during THRIVE month. Members of her online community receive a powerful combination of Daniela’s curated fitness classes and motivational speaking expertise. She’s currently offering new members a 30-day free trial, and UBC students can apply for a 20% monthly discount if they continue with her program!

 

3. VNYSA Yoga Studio

VNYSA, formerly known as Hot Box Yoga, is located right in the heart of campus in Wesbrook Mall. They offer a wide selection of online classes that combine modern and authentic principles of yoga that “may cause transformational experiences”. If that sounds like your jam, then take advantage of their current offering of a pack of five (virtual)class passes for $79!

 

4. Tight Club Athletics

Tight Club Athletics was conceived with one simple goal in mind: to make training balanced, accessible, fun and friendly – which sounds like the perfect way to combat online-education-induced sloth! Their Tight Club TV online program offers five new pre-recorded training sessions and three live classes a week, which you can try now for seven days free.

 

5. TurF

There’s a reason TurF has been such a persistent fitness hotspot in Kitsilano! While in the pre-pandemic days their bistro and coffee bar also attracted quite a crowd, their online studio class offerings are still just as popular as ever. If you’re interested in trying out any of their yoga, strength, or pilates classes, better jump on their two-week unlimited intro special!

In celebration Move UBC month, UBC Recreation is also offering free and discounted ClassPass memberships for UBC students staff, and faculty where you can check out a variety of fitness and wellness experiences both offline and online. See HERE for more information.
