Hey UBC! I hope everyone is enjoying the start of the school year so far. It’s awesome to see so many faces around campus again! As you may all know, getting from class to class can be a struggle, especially when you’re on one of the largest campuses in Canada! Here are 5 ways that you can be active while getting across campus!
1) Walking
Let’s start off with the most common way of getting around campus, walking! I know that everyone at UBC has that 10-minute interval between classes where you have to speed walk/practically run from one end of the campus to the other just to barely make it in time for their next class! When you’re not speed-walking between classes, walking can be a fun way to de-stress by either joining a friend and catching up or plugging in some tunes and enjoying the views of our beautiful campus. If you are looking for a way to meet new people and explore our outstanding campus feel free to check out our Wellbeing Walks!
If you have some time, feel free to also check out some walking routes that we have mapped out on campus!
2) Cycling
Cycling is an awesome way to get around campus. Having the opportunity to cut down travel time while zooming around campus sounds like a win-win to me. UBC is a very bike-friendly campus, with plenty of routes and trails and plenty of bike parking. We are also lucky enough to have an accessible bike-share service on campus, HOPR! HOPR bike share is a convenient way to get around campus, run errands or explore new areas. With over 200 bikes and conveniently placed docking stations around campus, biking on campus should be a breeze! Getting to know the service is a piece of cake, by just downloading the HOPR App and choosing a pass. Can’t wait to see you all cycling on campus!
Don’t forget to check out some of the amazing bike routes on campus!
3) Skateboarding
Skateboarding is an awesome way to get around campus. The fact that you can board around campus and at any time pick up and easily store your skateboard makes it not only a convenient mode of transportation but also a compact one! Just like for cycling, UBC is also a very board-friendly campus with smooth accessible paths and many passing lanes. Feel free to check out UBC’s awesome 8500 sqft Skatepark known for its skate community, located on the corner of Thunderbird Blvd. and Health Sciences Mall.
4) Scootering
Scootering is another fun way to get around campus. With scooters, you have the option to go manual or electric. Like skateboards, scooters are very compact and are easy to carry and store. Lucky for us, HOPR also offers an electric scooter service, that is just as accessible. If you are interested, UBC Skatepark also has an awesome scootering community!
5) Bussing
Although you may not think of bussing as a form of active transportation, it actually is! Firstly, you are making an economical decision by using public transportation, and secondly, bussing promotes walking as you go from your bus stop to your destination! Make sure to check out the 68 shuttle, a bus that runs along the west side of campus between the UBC Bus Exchange and Wesbrook Village. As long as you have your U-pass handy you’re good to go!
These are some of the many active ways you can get around campus. I hope to have inspired you today to get up and try a new form of active transportation. Let’s get up and let’s get moving UBC!
