It’s that time of year when the sun begins to rise later and set earlier. That time of year when you leave work or a lecture and at least one person says “Wow, I can’t believe it’s dark already!” It happens every year but somehow, it can still be a shock to the system. Understandably, moods can fluctuate with the seasons so, here are 4 tips to help beat the winter blues!
1. Get Cozy
In this case, the idiom “If you can’t beat them, join them” rings true. As much as I wish I had a superpower that could control the weather (à la X-Men’s Storm), I am of the population that understands this little concept is called fiction. So, since I can’t change the weather, it’s good to know that I CAN control the ~vibes~
To me, getting cozy entails a warm outfit, my favourite meal, comfort snacks, a cozy movie (usually one from the Harry Potter franchise), a large blanket, and a cup ‘o tea. Of course, everyone’s comfy vibes will look different but if you’re unsure where to start, try giving yourself some more TLC and see where that takes you!
2. Get Active
If you’re looking for some free endorphins, look no further! Moving your body is such an awesome method of beating the winter blues. Whether it’s for 15 minutes or 1 hour, you’ll be naturally igniting those stress-relieving chemicals in your body that your mind loves! In case you need some inspiration, the Move U Crew has some easy-to-follow movement breaks on the UBC Recreation Instagram.
3. Get Outside
Along the same lines, going outside for a walk to soak in the sun and clinging onto every sliver of vitamin D can help keep those winter blues at bay. Of course, this can be a bit tricky in Raincouver as it is known to rain for weeks on end. Despite this minor inconvenience, it’s still a good idea to get outside and breathe in that fresh air. On the bright side, I’ve heard walking in the rain gives off major main character energy.
4. Get Support
All things considered, this time of year can be hard. It may be helpful to reach out to friends and family. Spending time with other people can combat that isolating feeling that easily creeps in with the winter. Maybe combine all 4 tips in 1 and make a “Beating the Winter Blues” date with a friend! UBC’s Wellness Centre also hosts a variety of peer programs to promote wellbeing. If you are seeking professional help, exploring resources provided by Student Services can be a useful first step as well.
Hang in there, you’re not alone. Those winter blues will turn into spring yellows in no time! While we wait, let’s get cozy, active, outside, and connected. The Move U Crew offers services such as Physical Activity Coaching and Wellbeing Walks that will banish those blues in a flash!
