“Swim Transition” : Changes coming to swim lessons & lifeguard training

On Tuesday January 11, 2022, the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) announced a significant change to their core operations and programs such that they will wind down its involvement in all swim and lifeguard programming. The “Swim Transition” will see swimming and lifeguard training transfer to the Lifesaving Society Canada.  It has become evident from information provided that this announcement and transition is the result of collaborative work between the two agencies over the past 12-18 months.  The UBC Aquatic Centre remains committed to working with both agencies through the transition, and to ensure that facility visitors and the general public remain safe, informed and can continue with their swimming training goals and our community drowning prevention objectives.

There are resources available to families and current or prospective lifeguards and/or swim instructors – see below:

Whereas changes to swim lesson programming is not anticipated until late 2022, the UBC Aquatic Centre staff is already reviewing the considerations of this transition and will make every effort to communicate updates and future changes to our facility operations, lifeguard training/certifications, and/or swim lesson programming as it becomes available. Stay tuned for more.
