UBC Recreation offers two categories of fitness classes: series-based instructional fitness classes and drop-in group fitness classes.

These classes are open to Students, Staff & Faculty, and the public for registration. No experience is required for any of the classes and all abilities are welcome!

Outdoor Boot Camp
Enjoy a full-body workout in an outdoor setting! Body-weight exercises, sports drills, and conditioning intervals help you develop lean muscle and functional strength, while improving your core strength and cardiovascular endurance.
Athletic Fitness Boot Camp
Boost your performance with this functional, full-body workout. Plyometrics, sports drills, kettlebells, and conditioning intervals train your functional strength, core strength, agility, speed, power, cardio endurance, and VO2 Max.
Beginner Boot Camp
This moderate full-body workout effectively improves cardio, strength, and muscular endurance. Our personal trainers guide you through correct exercise form and execution, increasing your confidence and fitness
Body-Weight Boot Camp
Experience Calisthenics - the art of using your body-weight to build lean muscle, strong joints, flexibility, and mobility. A mixture of controlled movements builds gymnastic strength.
Cardio Core Boot Camp
Feel the burn! Cardio drills and high-intensity training intervals push your limits safely and effectively. Our personal trainers lead you through technical core exercises targeting your abs, obliques, and glutes!
Circuit Boot Camp
Perfect for participants who love exercise circuits! This well-rounded workout improves your cardio, strength, muscle tone, and burns through calories using exercise circuits. Core training included!
Express Boot Camp
Short and sweet. Our trainers maximize the effectiveness of these 45-minute workouts by including compound resistance movements, AMRAPs, and cardio intervals.
Full-Body Boot Camp
Boost your athletic performance with this full-body functional fitness workout. Our trainers switch up the routine every class to provide you with a variety of functional strength training, core work, agility, and cardio endurance drills.
H.I.I.T.
Get your sweat sesh here! High Intensity Interval Training uses short bursts of intense cardio training to maximize calorie burn and cardiovascular training. Burn through calories and leave feeling proud (and sweaty).
Pure Strength
This strength-based class focuses on building lean, chiseled muscle and improving strength. Our personal trainers coach you through effective resistance training exercises, with a focus on good form.
Strength & Sculpt Boot Camp
Build lean, chiseled muscle and improve strength with this full-body modular workout. Our personal trainers will guide you through effective resistance training exercises, with cardio training mixed in to improve body composition.
TNT Boot Camp
Trim and tone over your lunch hour with this fun, energetic class. This well-rounded workout improves your cardio, strength, muscle tone, and burns through calories using exercise circuits, movement combinations, and instructor-led drills.
Tabata Boot Camp
Tabata training incorporates short, intense bouts of intense effort followed by a short rest period. This cardio-focused class will push your cardio to its limits.
Abs & Strength
This group-fitness-style class combines core work with resistance training in a fun and energetic setting. Build strength and lean muscle, and target your core for improved posture and spine health.
CardioKick
This group-fitness-style class is a fusion of kickboxing techniques, aerobic conditioning, and resistance training. Drawing from traditional elements of martial arts, students will experience a full body blast in a fun and energetic setting.
Pump
This group-fitness-style class highlights resistance training to give you that full-body pump. Our motivating instructors help you push your limits in a fun and energetic setting.
Endurance Cycle
Develop your muscular and cardiovascular endurance! This 60-minute sweat session uses high-energy music to motivate you through longer speed intervals and climbing drills and leaves you with a sweat endorphin high.
Express Cycle
Short and sweet! Ride the rhythm of the music through this high-intensity express class to maximize cardio training and calorie burn in 35-minutes.
Power Cycle
Improve your cardio while building muscular strength and endurance! This 45-minute class is filled with energetic combinations of speed work, intervals, climbs, and high-RPM sprints.
Pilates
Pilates is designed to stretch and strengthen the muscles, creating a toned and lean look. Pilates improves posture, flexibility, and balance. Core exercises are emphasized, and you will definitely feel the burn!
Vinyasa Yoga
Vinyasa Yoga focuses on strength, endurance, balance, and flexibility. Practitioners flow through yoga postures like sun salutations while maintaining mindfulness and connection to the breath.
Flow Yoga
Fun and appropriate for all levels of skill for yoga. Flow yoga places an emphasis on moving through postures while synchronizing your breath and movement. This class will develop core strength, breath awareness, and improve your spine’s alignment.
Strength Beats
This group-fitness style class uses low weights and lots of repetitions to build strength and lean muscles making it a class for any fitness level! The workout is structured around great music that guides you through the exercises as we target every major muscle group and follow the beat throughout.
Hatha Yoga
A relaxed, revitalizing all-levels class designed to improve flexibility and muscle tone. Transitions between poses are slower-paced, providing more opportunity to focus on alignment and form.
Summer Barre Fitness
Barre Fitness combines yoga, Pilates, and ballet barre conditioning to tone your whole body while developing balance, strength, and flexibility. Classes consist of yoga poses that flow readily into strength work and students can expect to be challenged in a warm and friendly environment. Classes will utilize both the mat and the ballet barre.
Summer HIGH Fitness
HIGH Fitness has reinvented aerobics into an exciting new experience that combines simple modern fitness techniques with music you know and love from all genres. It is a high-energy, crazy-fun workout that will leave you sweating and wanting more whether you are a seasoned gym-goer or have never taken a fitness class before!
Summer Intro to Weightlifting
This studio setting focuses on weight and training using body bars, dumb bells, kettle bells, med balls and body weight. It will also include cardio and core training. This class is designed to tone and strengthen your body, giving you the look you want, all in a fun group atmosphere.
Summer Women on Weights
Learn proper weightlifting techniques for machines and free weight training! This class incorporates functional strength exercises with core training for more effective weight loss and toning. It also includes a stretching component and nutritional guidance.
Summer Zumba
Zumba fuses hypnotic Latin rhythms and easy-to-follow moves to create a unique fitness program that will blow you away. Zumba's choreography incorporates a wide variety of dance styles in a high energy setting.
Summer Ballet 01
Ballet I is designed for those new to dance or ballet. This class will teach students the foundations of ballet to help to build clean technique and proper alignment. We will work on balance, stretching, and strengthening through traditional exercises, all while having fun in a supportive environment.
Summer Burlesque
Awaken your inner feminine vixen! Learn sexy, tease-worthy dance steps in a comfortable and welcoming environment. Feel sexy and sassy through every step. Embrace your inner goddess. No dance experience necessary.
Summer Contemporary 1
Contemporary I is designed for beginners who are new to dance or contemporary. Students will explore artistry and gain strength and flexibility in this beginner contemporary class. We will begin with basic sequences on the floor and then move on to centre and travelling exercises. Students will work on healthy alignment and technique while getting a great full-body workout. The last part of class will focus on learning choreography and exploring the dynamics, expression, and musicality of a phrase. Contemporary dance is done in bare feet or cotton socks and comfortable clothing .
Summer Contemporary Ballet - Open
This class is for dancers with experience in either ballet or contemporary dance who want to continue to build on their skill level. We will begin with a thorough contemporary ballet barre that explores different movement qualities and musical styles. We will move into centre work, across the floor turns and jumps and finally, build a challenging choreo combination. Dancers who have taken Ballet 1 or Contemporary 1 are welcome to join this class as well as students who have a dance background.
Summer Dancehall
Dancehall is a highly energetic, rhythmic style which originated in Jamaica and has Reggae roots. Learn the foundations of dancehall in this open-level dance program which is uptempo and empowering. Fall in love with the dancehall movements and infectious beats which are taking the music industry by storm.
Summer Hip Hop
This is a street-dance based class that combines Hip Hop and Funk, utilizing the newest funky patterns and variations with fun and challenging dance techniques. Dance to Hip Hop and Pop music with energy, style, and a touch of attitude.
Summer K-Pop Dance
K-Pop contains elements of western pop, dance, electronic, R&B and hip-hop. Having taken North America by storm, K-Pop dance is a mix of these hip-hop styles and sass set to Korean Pop music.
Summer Latin Funk
Before any other Latin Dance fitness class came on the scene, there was LATIN FUNK DANCE! The original tropical blend of 6 different Latin styles with a cool place of Funk dance! Get fit in Latin style! Created by Dance Coach & Choreographer Gustavo Ferman.
Summer Lyrical Contemporary
Lyrical contemporary is an open-level class designed for all levels of dancers from beginner to experienced. It starts with a flowing Jazz and Ballet based warm up followed by some stretch and strengthening before spending the last half of class learning choreography. The music is expressive, dynamic and soul-fulfilling. Beginners are nurtured into learning to express themselves and more advanced dancers are challenged with options like floor work and turns provided by the teacher make things harder or easier. Come express yourself!
Summer Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu
Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a martial art and combat sport based on ground fighting and submission holds. Perhaps the most effective martial art for self-defense, it focuses on taking an opponent to the ground, controlling one's opponent, gaining a dominant position, and using a number of techniques to force them into submission via joint locks or chokeholds. This course will include both gi and no-gi classes.
Summer Classical Ju Jutsu
Classical Ju Jutsu is the close-quarter combat system developed over the centuries by Japanese warriors. Emphasis is on grappling techniques, but also includes striking, and the use of a variety of classical weapons such as the sword, dagger, and staff.
Summer Iaido
Iaido is the traditional Japanese martial art focused on the method of drawing and cutting with the Samurai sword. Develop mental discipline through control of body and sword movements.
Summer Judo
Perhaps the roughest of the martial arts, Judo is a dynamic combat sport that requires both physical power and mental discipline. This class utilizes techniques such as throws and holds to subdue the opponent while teaching maximum efficiency with minimal effort. UBC Recreation Judo instructors are Judo Canada and NCCP (National Coaching Certification Program) certified.
Summer Kickboxing
Kickboxing is a group of stand-up combat sports based on kicking and punching, historically developed from Karate but the modern kickboxing is mixed by taekwondo and boxing
Summer Muay Thai
Muay Thai combat focuses more on the martial art and is characterized by the combined use of fists, elbows, knees, shins and feet to strike and hold the opponent for offensive and defensive purposes. UBC Recreation Mauy Thai is completely safe and open to students of all levels.
Summer Nihon Goju Karate
Goju ryu karate relies on both hard and soft techniques and blends linear and circular movements. A variety of punches, kicks, open-handed, and closed-handed techniques are used as well as close-in techniques like takedowns and locks. Goju ryu techniques do not rely solely on strength and work well for any age, size, and gender. All experience levels are welcome.
Summer Sambo
Sambo is a Soviet martial art, an internationally-practiced combat sport, and a recognized style of amateur wrestling, stylistically similar to Judo, Greco-Roman Wrestling, and Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu. Literally meaning, "self-defense without weapons", Sambo is primarily a jacket-wrestling style, but it also includes striking similar to mixed martial arts.
Summer Shotokan Karate
Shotokan Karate is a widely popular form of weaponless karate involving punches, kicks, blocks, forms, and sparring. It is a way for participants to realize their potential as well as expand their physical and mental capabilities. Initially, classes are geared to beginner students, with more advanced lessons being introduced as the classes progress.
