Upcoming 2023 “Swim Transition”

The Canadian Red Cross will be transitioning swim lesson and lifeguard training to the Lifesaving Society Canada.

In early January 2022, the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) announced they will be winding down their swim lesson and lifeguard programming. New information is now available about the “Swim Transition” process which will see swimming and lifeguard training provided by the CRC transfer to the Lifesaving Society Canada.

Beginning in January 2023 the UBC Aquatic Centre will use the Lifesaving Society of Canada’s “Swim for Life” for swim lesson programming.  As part of this process, the UBC Aquatic Centre will continue to use the Red Cross for swimming lessons for the remainder of 2022.

To prepare for the transition from Red Cross to Lifesaving Society guided swim lessons, we are working with both organizations to ensure that there is detailed information to guide families in determining the correct level when they select future programs. View the current conversion chart here.

The UBC Aquatic Centre will be working closely with both agencies through the transition, and preparations for the transition are already underway. Additional updates will be shared Fall 2022. As new information becomes available, updates will be shared online as well as to recent registrants in swim lesson and lifeguard programs.
