2023 ‘Swim Transition’ Info Sessions & Course Conversion

Beginning in January 2023, the UBC Aquatic Centre will use the Lifesaving Society’s “Swim for Life” for swim lesson programming. This programming change will introduce new levels and progression steps for swim lesson programming, and will be used at the time of winter 2023 program registration.

Prior to program registration opening, we encourage guest to use it to preview the course conversion chart (to download a copy, click here). This chart outlines the previous Red Cross course equivalent, and will help guide guests in determining the correct level when they select programs moving forward.

To help prepare for the transition, the UBC Aquatic Centre will be hosting info booth sessions as an opportunity to learn more and ask questions before registration opens for the 2023 sessions.

Your child will receive their report card at the end of the course, with both their Red Cross and Lifesaving Society recommended level.

In early January 2022, the Canadian Red Cross (CRC) announced it is winding down its swim and lifeguard programming to direct more attention to surging humanitarian demands in other areas, and will be transitioning all programming to the Lifesaving Society.

In July 2022, the UBC Aquatic Centre announced that it would use the Swim for Life program effective January 2023.

The Canadian Red Cross and Lifesaving Society use different levels for progression. The UBC Aquatic Centre has developed an initial 1-page version of a conversion chart.  with this version highlighting the child and pre-school levels. The aim of this chart is to provide swimmers and their parents the chance to see the next logical progression for the swim lesson participant based on their age and swim abilities.

The UBC Aquatic Centre is working closely with both agencies through the transition, and all updates will be shared online as well as to recent registrants in swim lesson programs.
