For those of you who were on staff leading up to, and during the year of 2017, you will be familiar with the word “Gameplan” and will remember some very pivotal moments throughout the academic year working to secure funding for a new recreation facility on campus. In July 2022, construction of the new facility got started. There is currently a large hole on the north side of the Life Building (formerly the Student Union Building), and the western end of Student Union Boulevard. and we will see this new building come to life over the next 2-3 years. This is a very exciting time for recreation at UBC, as the new building will provide much needed recreation space for the amount of students currently attending UBC. The building will feature an indoor floor area of 101,000 square feet spread over four levels, including three gymnasium courts; an indoor run, roll, walk track; cardio and weightlifting areas; multipurpose rooms; universal and gender-specific change areas; and administrative offices.
The ActivateUBC campaign is currently ongoing, and if you would like to support the project, there is more information about and specifications here, as well as renderings and building details. Some donors will be recognized on the recreation centre donor wall that will also honour the history of recreation and intramurals. For a direct link to the campaign, click here.
