Weekend Round Up – October 1 & 2

This weekend saw big news with competition happening all ’round the TSC-sphere! Our teams kicked off October right with some big wins and performances!

Men’s Ultimate Makes Nationals!

Canadian Western University Ultimate Championships | October 1st

This was the annual qualifying tournament for Canadian University Ultimate Championships. This year, BC was only granted one bid to the tournament, so the Thunderbirds had to fight for that bid against UVic and UBC B. UBC was able to take down UVic 129 in the first game, with a dominant performance from their defensive line. UBC then took down the UBC B Team in a blowout game, and finally won in double game point against the UBC Alumni team. Thus, the Thunderbirds were able to take the bid granted to BC, and qualified for the Canadian University Ultimate Championships, taking place from October 1516 in Brampton, Ontario.

Last second snag by Justin Podnar to help push our ‘Birds on top of UVic for a spot at Nationals.

Cycling Rides Strong!

Quidditch Opens up October!

October Octopus Open | October 1st

UBC Thunderbird Quidditch Sport Club had its first game of the season! This was also their second time hosting a tournament which was a huge success. This was the first game ever for four of their rookies and their first time this year going up against the other two Quidditch teams in Vancouver. The tournament was just for fun and does not affect league rankings but they’ll be competing against the same teams at Western Canada Divisional Championships on October 23rd. We are so proud of our team for playing excellent games after only 1 practice so far! We can’t wait to dominate at the next tournaments.

Lacrosse Falls Short

UBC Lacrosse SC 5 – 8 Tri-City Eclipse | October 1st

Coming off a season opener win, the Lacrosse SC looked to continue the momentum through their week 2 match against the Tri-City Eclipse. Unfortunately, tired legs got the best of the birds this weekend, falling 8-5. With a bye week coming up, the guys look to re-group and get ready for the next match.

Men’s Lacrosse regroups after the game to revisit their season-long road map.

Sailing Preps For Nationals

North West Advanced Clinic | October 1st

UBC Sailing SC went to the North West Advanced Clinic in Seattle, Washington this weekend! There they had a great opportunity to meet and learn from the other sailors in their conference along with receiving coaching in straight line boat speed and start maneuvers. They look to use this knowledge when they go off to Nationals in Montreal in late October.

Our sailors taking the extra time to get better for their big competition in Montreal!
