TSC Weekend Round Up: November 5/6

This weekend saw competition on the tennis courts, on the lacrosse field and on water. A return to action for the both Tennis SC’s, Lacrosse SC‘s first game in November and another regatta for Sailing SC highlight the TSC competitions for the weekend.

Women’s Tennis

Tennis Exhibition Matches | Vancouver, BC | November 5-6

This past weekend, the UBC Women’s Tennis team competed in their first match of the season in an exhibition match against University of Calgary and University of Alberta.

Day 1: UBC Thunderbirds 5 – 2 University of Calgary Dinos

On Saturday, the team came out strong against University of Calgary, defeating them 5-2 with rookies Jennifer Shui and Arwen Fong not dropping a single game in their singles matches!

Arwen Fong had a day against the Dinos, not dropping a single game in her singles matches.

Julia Rees and Jennifer Shui post-doubles match versus University of Calgary.

Day 2: UBC Thunderbirds 0 – 7 University of Alberta Pandas

On Sunday, the team suffered a tough loss to reigning national champions, University of Alberta, but still took a win with Izzy Evans and Sara Zupanc defeating their opponents in doubles! The close matches from this weekend have only motivated the team to work harder and prepare themselves for Regionals in the spring!

Men’s Tennis

UBC Thunderbirds 7 – 0 Simon Fraser University Red Leafs | Vancouver, BC | November 5-6

This past Saturday, Men’s Tennis kicked off their title defence with their first exhibition of the season against SFU at the UBC Tennis Bubble! In singles, their lineup swept through the competition as all 6 of their singles players won their respective matches. The same pattern was also seen in our doubles matches resulting in an overall 7-0 win for the Thunderbirds! As this is an exhibition, there are no ranking effects or qualification effects but it serves as a great confidence booster going into their season!

They host University of Calgary and University of Alberta at the UBC Tennis Bubble on November 19th and November 20th. These exhibitions preview what’s in store for the Western Regionals in Spring 2023, as the winners of that tournament have gone on to represent the West at the Canadian University Tennis Championships and ultimately win a National Championship.

Lacrosse

UBC Thunderbirds 5 – 16 Ladner Pioneers | Vancouver, BC | November 5-6

On the lacrosse field, our Thunderbirds battled through the cold with Ladner but another slow start put themselves in a hole to start the game with a final score of 16-5. Ladner’s shifty attackmen and aggressive defensemen left the birds making poor decisions and taking a beating. On the bright side, Patrick McCullough played great on the face-off despite running the whole field for the near entirety of the game. Nicolaas Fernandez also continued his scoring steak with a nice low angle shot early in the game.

Sailing

North/North | Seattle, WA | November 5-6

Our sailing ‘Birds went back across the border to compete at the North/North regatta, an In-Conference Regatta where UBC competed against other schools in the Pacific North West. North/North was a fantastic experience for the team. UBC finished 2nd overall and 1st in B division. Light and shifty wind made for tricky racing both days yet they were able to connect the puffs and play the shifts to their favour.
