Ultimate Canada has announced it’s rosters for the Open, Women’s and Mixed categories for the 2023 WFDF U24 Championships. Read more to find out about our Thunderbirds from Men’s Ultimate and Women’s Ultimate SC’s on the national team rosters!
A total of 18 Thunderbirds are representing Team Canada at the 2023 World U24 Championships. 6 players from the Men's Ultimate team are representing Canada, with 5 on the Open side and 1 on the Mixed side. The Women's team has a strong representation with 12 athletes donning the maple leaf next summer - 9 on the Women's side and 3 on the Mixed side.
'Birds at Club Competitions
Some of the athletes selected on these teams have seen success on national and international stage. Athletes from both teams represented Vancouver's club scene in both mixed, open and women's competitions. Vancouver saw great success in club tournaments this year with our current thunderbirds and alumni playing key roles in their placements.
UBC had 5 current Thunderbirds and other alumni play on Red Flag, Vancouver's premier mixed team. At the 2022 World Ultimate Club Championships (WUCC), they placed 2nd in the world against the world's top mixed clubs.

UBC also had a few current Thunderbirds and other alumni play on Traffic, Vancouver's premier elite women's team at the 2022 USA Ultimate National Championships. They placed 7th against North America's best clubs.

Open Roster
5 athletes from the UBC Men's Ultimate SC are on the U24 Open side. Abeer Lamba, Justin Podnar, and Kevin Tong all played on the Red Flag roster that placed 2nd at WUCC. Both Devon Bringeland-Powell and Yu Chi Lin play for Furious George, Vancouver's premier Open club. Yu Chi was also voted as the Men's Ultimate SC's athlete of the year in early 2022 for his leadership skills and his key roles on both offensive and defensive lines at Canadian Ultimate Championships.
The Open team is also coached by Edward Guo, who is now part of the coaching staff for the UBC Men's Ultimate SC.

Women's Roster
9 superstar thunderbirds from UBC Women's Ultimate were selected to be part of the U24 Women's roster for 2023. Andrea Moir, Anna Goddu, Emma Best, Helena Tremblay, Miu Shiraiwa, Oliana Chan and Stephanie Siu all played key roles for their clubs' success this year and for UBC when they placed 7th at USA College Nationals.
One bird to watch out for is Madison Ong, who made the U24 team back in 2019 that came 3rd in the world championships in Germany. Madison also received TSC Athlete of the Year honours in 2023 as she helped set the tone for her team's competitive success, as they placed 3rd in North America at the D-1 College Championships.
Another bird to watch out for is Mika Kurahashi, who has a storied background in the ultimate world. Kurahashi won the 2019 Junior Female Athlete of the Year by being the youngest player on the U24 Mixed National Team and working her way up to start on both defensive and offensive lines. In 2022, she nabbed Women's Ultimate Rookie of the Year honours for her key contributions to their top-8 finish in American Division 1 College Championships.

Mixed Roster
4 UBC athletes made the Mixed roster. Filip from the men's side and Amelie, Avery and Grace representing our female thunderbirds.
Amelie Marshall, who recently played a key role for the U20 Canadian team to win a bronze medal at World Juniors in Poland was part of the final roster.
