Storm the Wall Recap & Musqueam Artwork

Recap & Artwork Unveiling

Storm the Wall 2023 saw over 700 teams participating, over the days of March 19-22. Through the hard work of each and every one of our volunteer staff – Leagues, Digital Content, Media, and of course Events this event could not come to life – thank you for all your time and dedication.

In late 2021, UBC’s Athletics and Recreation department initiated a project in partnership with Musqueam to develop an art piece that reflected the Musqueam story of UBC’s sports nickname, the Thunderbirds. This year for the first time our walls featured a new Musqueam artwork piece by Deanna-Marie Point. The piece titled “Thunderbird Takes Flight” was present in the heart of campus for the duration of clinics & races.

The piece was introduced in a special unveiling event on March 13. Deanna-Marie’s version of the Thunderbird represents a significant milestone in the relationship between UBC and the Musqueam people, on whose land UBC’s Vancouver campus is situated.

Additionally,  Kirsten Call, Communications Designer was instrumental in the process of creating a version of this piece to be shared outwards – Kirsten’s work has been prevalent throughout all our Intrmural projects, and this highlighted her capabilities further. Alyssa Reyes (Manager, Physical Activity), Kavie Toor (Managing Director Athletics & Recreation), and Aaron Miu (Senior Manager, Communications & Marketing) have each been instrumental in maintaining this relationship and keeping this project on track.

We highly encourage you to read more about Deanna’s story and the process behind the creation of this piece here.
