Mel Zajac Jr:  The meet is named after Mel (Melvin) Zajac Jr., who competed at the Canada Games, and was a swimmer on the Canadian National Team representing Canada at the Pan Am Games, the World Championships and at the Montreal 1976 Olympic Summer Games. Mel Jr passed in a kayaking accident in British Columbia’s Chilliwack River in 1986.  The Mel Zajac Jr. Int’l Swim Meet provides the unique and enduring opportunity to honour Mel Zajac Jr.’s competitive spirit and love of swimming, reflected in his achievements as part of the Canadian National swim team – the event has been held in the Canadian Olympian’s honour since 2000.

Zajac Family Community Support:  The Mel Jr. and Marty Zajac Foundation was created by philanthropists Mel & Irene Zajac following the loss of their two sons within the same year. Mel Zajac Sr., from his humble upbringing during the Great Depression, has been committed to helping children throughout his life. The creation of the Zajac Ranch for Children is having a lasting impact on the lives of countless children throughout the region.  Learn more about Mel Zajac via this recent article highlighting Mel’s story of resilience and compassion.
