UBC’s sport clubs are kicking off November with 3 teams traveling for competition. Check out what our athletes said about their competition below!

Sailing

The UBC TSC Sailing team competed in the North-North Regatta in Seattle this past weekend. After waiting out a thunderstorm the team was ready to sail. Winds would change direction, keeping our sailors on our toes as we adjusted to lake sailing in unfamiliar boats. With each race, the team improved. In one rotation we ended up finishing third and fourth. After the end of the first day, the team was sitting in an overall position of 13th place out of 19 talented teams.

We were hoping to continue the momentum to the next day, however, the Sunday curse struck again. Sunday’s have traditionally brought awful conditions. From smoke to ice to light wind - this regatta was no exception. The Sunday curse struck again with no wind and therefore no races. However the team bonded and we are looking forward to using this experience in our upcoming regatta, next weekend in Bellingham.

Table Tennis

We had a great time competing with teams in the Northwest division this Saturday in Eugene, Oregon. We had 17 players travel from Vancouver to compete as members of Co-ed teams and Women’s teams. In Co-ed team events, our team placed third. Our women’s team fought hard and ended up claiming the first spot. This tournament helped the players get familiar with how draws and competitions at NCTTA work, while also getting chances to increase their rating. Next up - we will be playing in Divisional II to secure our spot for NCTTA Regionals.

Co-ed team: 3rd Place

Women’s team: 1st Place

Shout-out to Grace Zhang for managing all the travel logistics behind the trip. She also made sure all the members got to showcase their potential by getting a chance to play 3-4 matches each, while also playing her own matches.

Akkshita was the only player representing us in both: the women and co-ed team. She was busy playing her matches throughout the day while also managing to keep our Instagram followers updated about our matches.

Shoutout to Asmit Das and Tom Liu for always guiding and showing support to the team players in the little time they got between their consecutive matches.

Our team had many rookie players, a huge shoutout to each one of them for showcasing their table tennis potential and sportsmanship in their first tournament while winning matches for the team.

Yuto and Diana made a terrific comeback in their games getting us closer to the victory.

On Saturday the 'Birds got the W over Calgary 5-2, with some great rookie debuts and hard-fought battles.

Sunday, the team started strong with some amazing doubles against Alberta. UBC fought hard in some tight singles matches, but fell short 1-6.

This weekend highlighted the team’s great potential for the upcoming season! Special shoutout to club lead Viktoria Abanos & rookie Anuradha Chopra for their superb doubles match. The 'Birds are looking forward to getting back to work to improve even more!

Next weekend's competitions include TSC Sailing going down to Washington for the Frosh Soph regatta, TSC Men's Tennis heading to Edmonton for their turn against the University of Alberta and the University of Calgary in an exhibition series and TSC Quadball taking the trip to Vernon for Quadball Regionals.
