Get Ready for Move UBC 2024!
Move UBC is a university-wide, month-long initiative that takes place every February. It aims to increase physical activity and motivate people to explore different ways to stay active! Small changes can add up to big impacts—moving more can improve both mental and physical health, impact academic and professional success, and contribute to wellbeing in meaningful ways. This February, make movement a part of your day by getting involved with Move UBC.
Here is a breakdown of the fun events hosted by the Move U Crew to look forward to and why U should join them! For more details about the events and where to register head over to the UBC Recreation website.

Feb 1 | Move UBC Recess
Recess is the time to unlock some core memories and relive some of the most fun times from our childhood. This event is inspired by recess breaks that emphasized play, getting fresh air, eating snacks, and making friends. As we grew up, all of that stopped. But why?
As students, it is easy to get caught up in a cycle of studying, sprinting to class, working, and running daily errands. And all of this without a break (no, a TikTok break doesn’t count)! We have forgotten the importance of enjoying the outdoors, spending time away from the endless to-do lists, and giving our eyes a break from all the technology sitting on our desk.
Move UBC Recess would be a great way to take a break, unwind, and get involved in fun and playful activities that remind us of a simpler, carefree time. The Move U Crew is bringing lawn games, friendship bracelet making, and the giant parachute, all onto MacInnes Field!
Last year’s experience showed just how much students appreciated having the opportunity to engage with peers while playing fun games, listening to nostalgic music, and munching on nostalgic snacks. If you want to play a game of giant Jenga, while eating Dunkaroos and singing Party in the USA, you need to be at Recess on February 1 anytime from 12PM to 2PM!
Feb 6 | Exploring the Relationship between Body Image and Movement Workshop
Influences like social media and diet culture have warped our perception of body image. It has become harder than ever to look in the mirror and be happy with the reflection you see. Join Registered Dietitian Stephanie Dang (she/her) and Registered Clinical Counsellor Dr. Veronica Li (she/her) from CAYA Health Centre for a one-hour, virtual workshop on diet culture, body image, self-criticism, and the impacts on self-esteem.
By introducing this workshop, we hope to equip participants with strategies on developing a healthy relationship with food while distancing ourselves from diet culture. The workshop will also touch upon the relationship between movement and self-esteem. This workshop is a great way to start your self-love and positive journey into 2024. It is a place to have an open, honest, and raw discussion about body image while learning from two qualified professionals. Since the workshop will be occurring through Zoom, you have the option to watch it from an in-person location at the Point Grey Campus or from the comfort of your own home.
This event is a safe space for everyone! We encourage all of us to move towards holistic wellbeing and unlock our self-confidence through this session!
Feb 6 | Mix and Move: An Active Baking Class
Introducing the best of both worlds–yummy apply crisps and some fun movement! Join the Move U Crew and the UBC Baking Club as we bake delicious apple crisps while participating in movement!
Movement does not have to be lifting weights for an hour at the gym. You can add movement into any part of your day. In true Move U Crew style, this event is going to teach you just that! Not only will you learn how to bake something new, but you will also learn some helpful movements to fit into your daily routine. You can expect everything from light stretches to some more energetic dance moves. Don’t worry though, everything is beginner friendly, and has modifications. We are not dancers, just very enthusiastic!
It is a perfect way to destress and take a break in the middle of the week. We promise good music, good food, and giveaway prizes at the end!
Feb 29 | Cha Cha Slide
As a finale and celebration of Move UBC 2024, we are bringing back the BELOVED Cha Cha Slide. Dance is a great way to slide in some physical activity that is not only fun but will also boost your mood and creativity. The Cha Cha Slide is going to make walking to your next class more fun!
All you have to do is be at Martha Piper Plaza at 12:20PM on February 29. and join your peers and friends as the Move U Crew leads you through the Cha Cha Slide. Performing even simple movements for just a few minutes in your day can help improve your physical and mental health!
Please note there is a lot more going on in the month; for more Move UBC events hosted by our other partners, be sure to check out the Move UBC Events Calendar. Move with U, soon!
